Pulaski County voters have narrowed down their list of candidates heading into November’s General Election. The tightest race of Tuesday’s primary was for county auditor. Incumbent Republican Laura Wheeler narrowly defeated challenger Tim Hoffa Jr. by a margin of 50.49-percent-to-49.51-percent or just 17 votes. Hoffa had led throughout the early returns, before Wheeler took the lead with the final vote center counted.

A 10-percent pay cut for all of Pulaski County’s board and commission members drew some concerns during Thursday’s election board meeting. During last fall’s budgeting process, the county council voted to cut their own pay, that of the county commissioners, and that of all other county board members in the 2020 budget. But Clerk JoLynn Behny said the council doesn’t have that authority, when it comes to the election board.

The Pulaski County Election Board is planning to start budgeting for voting machine upgrades. State lawmakers are considering a bill that would require voting machines to have a “voter verifiable paper audit trail” by the end of 2029. Adding the necessary printers to Pulaski County’s machines is estimated to cost $45,000.

Pulaski County Election Board to Request $600 Raise for Clerk
Pulaski County Clerk Christi Hoffa would get a pay raise for her duties with the county election board, under its 2019 budget proposal. Hoffa reviewed the proposal with the rest of the election board Monday. She explained that much of the budget work was done before board members Jon Frain and Laura Bailey were replaced by Patty Sullivan and Jessye Gilley.

Two new members were recently sworn in to complete the makeup of the Pulaski County Election Board. Jon Frain and Laura Bailey are no longer board members. Patty Sullivan and Jessye Gilley were appointed as their replacements.
