Two Winamac Residents Arrested on Charges of Manufacturing Methamphetamine

Two Winamac residents were arrested on Sunday on methamphetamine related charges.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department officers went to 301 N. East St. Lot 17 on a complaint that the residents were manufacturing methamphetamine. When officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found James Larvick, 43, and Jimmy Hopkins, 50, in the adjacent lot in the process of manufacturing methamphetamine. The suspects had trespassed onto the property to assemble the lab. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The Indiana State Police Clan Lab Team was called to clean up the scene.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department to Hold Women’s Firearm Training

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department is offering a basic firearms class for women this week. The class begins today and continues Thursday and Saturday.

The free course offers two evenings of classroom instruction today and Thursday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. ET and a day on the range on Saturday, September 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET. Participants will need to provide their own ammunition for the day.

Star City Man Injured in One Vehicle Accident

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated a one vehicle accident Thursday morning on State Road 14 between County Roads 550 and 600 East.

Richard Stevenson, 59, of Star City told police that he was traveling eastbound on State Road 14 when, for some unknown reason, traveled into the westbound lane of traffic. He said he did not attempt to correct this action because he stated he would have lost control of the vehicle. Stevenson’s vehicle then left the north side of the roadway and collided with a pole and a mailbox before coming to rest on the side of the road.

Winamac Brothers Arrested after Incident

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department officers arrested two brothers after an incident Monday.

Police learned of the whereabouts of Brandon Gamblin, of Winamac, and attempted to locate him as he had a warrant out for his arrest. Police arrived at the residence on U.S. 35 but he was not there. Later, officers observed a vehicle approaching the residence that matched the description of the vehicle that Gamblin’s brother, Nathan, drives. Police asked Nathan Gamblin where his brother was and he stated that he didn’t know. He was later found inside the residence and taken into custody.

Fire Officials Investigate Arson Incident in Star City

The Star City Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a house fire that occurred at Nathan VanDerAa’s home in Star City on Sunday.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office told WKVI that the fire is considered incendiary, meaning that it was created by someone. The home and VanDerAa’s vehicle were both set on fire. VanDerAa was reportedly not at home at the time of the incident. If you have any information about this arson, call the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department at (574) 946-6655. Pulaski County Officers Arrest Two in Separate Incidents; Formal Drug Charges Pending

Ronald Lee Magers of Medaryville was arrested Thursday after an attempted residential entry. The victim identified the suspect as Magers and he was located a short time after the incident and taken into custody.

During a search of Magers’ clothing, a number of illegal items were located, including drug paraphernalia, digital scales, pills and several small bags that were suspected to contain marijuana. Magers was arrested and transported to the Pulaski County Jail. Formal charges are pending.

Two Arrested on Burglary Charges in Pulaski County

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated a string of burglaries and theft occurring near the intersection of County Road 1100 West and State Road 14 and two people were arrested as a result of that investigation.

Detectives Dave Walters and Scott Taylor conducted surveillance in this location on August 3rd and 4th. On August 5th, Bryan Henke, 30, of Medaryville was seen by detectives breaking into a farm building in that area. A short time later, police were also able to apprehend Clay Lovely, 30, of North Judson, who was reportedly assisting Henke in the burglary. Henke reportedly told police that they were trying to steal an ATV. Both were taken to the Pulaski County Jail and have preliminary charges of Burglary. Lovely has an additional charge of Driving While Suspended. Bond was set at $25,000 each.

Francesville Man Arrested after Pursuit in Pulaski County

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Francesville man after a pursuit incident on Friday, August 5th.

Officers were traveling westbound on 900 South approaching 1400 West when a police unit from Monticello and another from Monon passed in front of them at a high rate of speed. Police learned that the units were in pursuit of a wanted person the Pulaski County officers were attempting to locate earlier that evening and they joined in the pursuit.

Winamac Pair Arrested on Possession Charges

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrested two Winamac residents at a campground on methamphetamine related charges yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to a Pulaski County campground for a report of suspicious activity. A person who is familiar with the residents and campers at the campground noticed a vehicle that appeared out of place. Officers arrived and found 24-year-old Jeffrey L. Jacobs and 35-year-old Michael Mills in Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Paraphernalia. They were transported to the Pulaski County Jail on those preliminary charges.

One Vehicle Accident Injures Francesville Resident; Charges Pending

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department officers were called to a single-vehicle accident scene on County Road 500 South near 1600 West in Francesville on Sunday. Kenneth Nuest, 47, of Francesville told police that he was traveling on County Road 500 South when he fell asleep. His vehicle hit some gravel which caused him to wake up. He reportedly was traveling off the roadway on the north side of the road. He attempted to correct the vehicle and told police that he believes that he over-corrected. The vehicle then began to fishtail and the vehicle left the roadway and began to flip and slide.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Fatal Accident

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated a fatal accident yesterday.

Deputy Michelle Jackson told WKVI that Jody Young of Union Mills was driving southbound on State Road 39. She stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with State Road 14 in Pulaski County and continued into the intersection and was struck by a MAC dump truck, driven by Richard Biddle of Lafayette. The truck hit the passenger side of the vehicle as he was traveling eastbound on State Road 14. Sabrina Oberle, 15, a passenger in Young’s vehicle, died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Young received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Pulaski County Officers Arrest Winamac Woman on a Heroin Charge

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Winamac woman on Sunday after police reportedly found heroin in her vehicle on a routine traffic stop on State Road 39 near 600 North.

Pulaski County Prosecutor Stacey Mrak told WKVI that when officers questioned 39-year-old Marla Freeman she said she had allegedly bought the drug while she was in Merrillville. She is facing a preliminary charge of Possession of Heroin. Police initially pulled her over after observing a headlight out on the vehicle.

Vandalism Reported at Monterey Elementary School

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department received a vandalism complaint at the Monterey Elementary School on Thursday, June 23rd.

A staff member told police that she noticed paint on the side of the school building. Words were painted on the brick wall and on a window. A small hole was made on the corner of the window but it is unknown if it had been shot or if a rock had hit it. When police investigated, the words were recognized as being associated with gang activity.

Pulaski County Man Arrested on Intimidation Charges

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department were called to 5110 W. and 400 N. regarding an intimidation incident on Thursday.

Keith Powers told police that he was standing outside and he heard dogs barking near his residence and people talking through the woods. Powers said his dogs had begun to run toward the woods and Powers went inside his residence to retrieve a gun. He told police that he shot multiple rounds into the sky. Powers said his dogs return when he fires his weapon. He said he got into his truck and looked for the people in the woods. He found raccoon hunters and told him to stay off his property. Powers said that one of the hunters reached into his truck and Powers said he would defend himself if necessary.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Accidental Shooting

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was called to an accidental shooting on Sunday, June 19th.

Robert Avery, of Winamac, told police that he saw a chipmunk on a woodpile they have by the house and decided he was going to shoot at it. According to police, his girlfriend, Dawn Vanaman, knew he was going to shoot at it but she was trying to keep her kitten from running into the line of fire and instead, Dawn got into the line of fire. Avery reportedly told police that parts of the projectile shot from a rifle hit Dawn in the neck area. Vanaman was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Vanaman told police that the shooting was an accident. Avery was reportedly drinking the day of the incident.

The reporting officer forwarded the case to the Detective’s Division for further review.

Passed Out Motorists Arrested

Two Pulaski County residents were arrested after police found them reportedly passed out at the Marathon gas station in Medaryville on Sunday.

Police pulled up to the vehicle that was parked at the pumps.  Officers woke up the occupants, Finas Conley, 43, of Francesville and Tyson Matthews, 21, of Medaryville, and both were incoherent.  Police found a plate with a white powdery substance in Conley’s lap and a silver pill container.  Also found was a straw with a white powdery substance on it and inside it.   The pair were allegedly in illegal possession of prescription medication at the time of the incident and they were in the act of snorting it.  They were detained and taken to the Pulaski County Jail.

Pulaski County Police Department Investigates Theft

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated a theft from Twice is Nice on Saturday.

The owner, Kristen Ledden, told police that Stephanie Burton, 31, of San Pierre, was in her store and caught Burton placing a pair of shorts into her purse.  Ledden confronted Burton and asked her to remove the item from her purse, give it back to her and leave the store.  Burton sat on a chair outside the store and Ledden called the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

Thieves Hit Medaryville Marathon Station

A burglary occurred at the Marathon Station in Medaryville on Sunday, June 5th.

The power had gone out in the store late Saturday and the store was forced to close. At approximately 1:30 a.m. ET, an employee drove around the store to check on it and all doors were secured. The store manager arrived at the business about four hours later and discovered the west door had been kicked open. The suspect(s) went into the cash register area and forced open a change box, but no money was reported missing. After a preliminary inventory check, it was found that seven to eight cartons of cigarettes were stolen, seven or eight 24 pack cases of beer were stolen along with an unknown amount of alcohol.

The police continue to investigate this incident. An Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technician was called to investigate the scene. The case has been turned over to Pulaski County investigations and the Medaryville Police Department.

Star City Man Arrested on Methamphetamine Related Charges

Nathan VanDerAa, 33, of Star City, was arrested in Monterey on Friday, June 3rd, on suspicion of Possession of Methamphetamine.

An officer from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department reportedly saw VanDerAa pass by him and noted that he was speeding on 700 North in the area of 450 East. As the officer was turning around to follow VanDerAa, the officer allegedly saw VanDerAa’s left hand reach out of the driver’s window and let go of a bright white bag. The officer retrieved the bag and it contained a white powdery substance that later field-tested to be positive for methamphetamine.

Two Injured in Motorcycle Accident in Pulaski County

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated a single motorcycle accident on Tuesday, May 31st, near the intersection of 1000 South and 1400 West. The driver of the motorcycle, Kyle Anderson, 23, of Buffalo and his passenger, Joshua Anderson, 21, were traveling westbound on County Road 1000 South when the motorcycle collided with a deer. The motorcycle then struck a concrete culvert and a utility pole. The pair were located in the ditch on the north side of the roadway and were airlifted to South Bend Memorial for their injuries. The extent of their injuries is unknown. Alcohol is not suspected in this case.
