Knox City Council Approves Purchase of Tax Lien Certificate for Parkview Property

Long-term efforts by the City of Knox to buy up available land in Parkview Heights took a step forward Tuesday. The city council authorized the purchase of a tax lien certificate, at the request of Mayor Dennis Estok. “It’s a property down in Parkview Heights that went through the tax sale,” he explained. “Nobody bought it. It’s a burned-out house. We did get the owners of that to clean the house up. They did leave the foundation and all that. They have no intentions of redeeming the property through the tax sale, and that’s where the county can transfer it. We can buy it for $35 off the certificate sale.”

Starke County Council, Commissioners to Meet Tonight

The Starke County Council members will hold several public hearings on budgets tonight. Those public hearings will include the budgets for Starke County, North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, Starke County Airport, Solid Waste Department, and the Koontz Lake Conservancy District. A public hearing is also set for the Cumulative Capital Development Fund Additional Appropriation.

Hamlet Council Arranges Financing for Road Work to be Done by County Highway Department

The Hamlet Town Council approved funding arrangements Wednesday for some upcoming street repairs. Council member Brian Earnest said the town’s identified four sections of road in need of work, with the repairs to be done by the Starke County Highway Department. “The roads that they found were Maple Street from Plymouth Street to Oak Street, Madison Street from Hamlet to Main, Davis Street from Division to Lincoln, and Main Street from Terry to Madison. Starke County Park Board to Discuss Bass Lake Beach and Campground, County Forest

The conditions of the Bass Lake Beach and Campground will continue to be discussed during tonight’s Starke County Park Board meeting. Concerns that the facility’s operator, Callahan Development, LLC, reportedly hasn’t addressed safety issues at the facility have led county officials to look at the possibility of making the repairs themselves. Specifically, the beach house patio was the topic of a heated discussion during last month’s meeting.
