A vacancy on the Starke County Planning Commission has been resolved. It was reported to the county commissioners Monday that the county’s township trustees voted four-to-three to have Oregon Township Trustee Mark Allen fill the trustee’s seat. The commissioners affirmed his appointment with a unanimous vote.

A travel advisory has been issued for Starke County. That means travel may be restricted in certain areas, due to hazardous conditions, and drivers are asked to use caution. In a Facebook post, the Starke County Highway Department says it expects snow-covered roads and drifting snow Thursday night.

Local communities are getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state to help with road projects. The recipients of the fall round of Community Crossings grants were announced by the Indiana Department of Transportation Tuesday. The program covers 50 or 75 percent of the cost of qualifying road and bridge projects.

The Town of Hamlet is moving forward with a grant application for future upgrades to Indiana Avenue/Starke County Road 500 North. The town is coordinating with the Starke County Highway Department to apply for funding to widen and resurface the road from U.S. 35, through town, and to County Road 750 East.
