Starke County Youth Club Stresses Health and Wellness

The Starke County Youth Club provides more than homework help for the 600 students it serves at four after-school sites. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi  says health and wellness is a critical component of the Starke County Youth Club’s mission.

“When we survey our kids about how much time they would be watching television or how much time they’d be playing on their game systems or video gaming, we know that’s significant, and it’s way more time than is healthy for them,” Szakonyi  says.

She adds the Starke County Youth Club is constantly looking for ways to help the students they serve be more active. Instructors try to balance technology-based learning with physical activity, nutrition classes and life skills that help them to be healthier in all aspects. Continue reading

Youth Club Radiothon To Take Place Today

Irene Szakonyi

It’s finally here: The Starke County Youth Club Radiothon will take place today to raise funds for the organization that helps over 600 Starke County children. With four sites throughout the county that provide after-school, summer, and recreational programs, more than 200 students use the after-school program each and every day.

Youth Club Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says they will be accepting pledges for six hours.

“We take over the station at 10 in the morning, and we are live on the air until 4 p.m. taking calls. Thank you WKVI and all of our donors out there,” said Szakonyi.

The key aspects of the SCYC program are education, enrichment, relationships, and community. Everyone is encouraged to make a pledge for this very worthwhile cause.

Starke County Youth Club Radiothon Nearing

Each day brings Starke County Youth Club Radiothon closer, and Irene Szakonyi, Executive Director of the Youth Club, says they are getting ready for the event which is planned for Friday, and she encourages everyone to make a donation. Szakonyi explained that the club gives students the opportunity to collaborate with many different schools and organizations across the country.

“We really appreciate that we are able to collaborate not just with our school corporations, but with other local agencies, too. We feel like we can be part of that network that brings people together, whether it’s Purdue Extension and 4-H programs, or Junior Achievement and Starke United. All the way across the board we feel like we have partners in helping kids and families succeed,” said Szakonyi.

Szakonyi will explain more about the event tomorrow, and on Friday, the radiothon will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
