A number of road projects may have motorists adjusting their routes in the coming weeks. In LaPorte County, U.S. 6 will be closed between U.S. 35 and State Road 39 starting Monday until mid-August. INDOT says one lane in each direction will remain open for local traffic only. Through traffic is asked to use U.S. 35, U.S. 30, and State Road 39 as a detour.

A Michigan City man has been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s bank robbery in Wanatah. LaPorte County Police say Terry A. West Jr., 44, has formally been arrested for the Level 5 felony of robbery, following a formal police interview.

A robbery at a Wanatah bank Tuesday morning has led to two people being taken into custody. LaPorte County Police say the robbery happened shortly before 11:00 at the Horizon Bank on West First Street.

Interest in upgrading U.S. 30 to freeway standards doesn’t appear to be as high as previously thought, and that’s drawing frustration from Hamlet officials. Ron Gifford with the Starke County Economic Development Foundation told the town council Wednesday that the Indiana Department of Transportation is looking at other projects now and doesn’t appear interested in U.S. 30.

Uncertainty about the future of U.S. 30 is making it hard for Hamlet to attract businesses, according to Town Council President Dave Kesvormas. During last week’s meeting, he said that local officials have been told that INDOT wants to upgrade U.S. 30 to freeway standards, but now, they’re hearing proposals for a J-turn intersection at State Road 39.

The Northwest Indiana Times says it happened shortly after 9:00 a.m. in Valparaiso. The woman’s husband was driving her to Porter Regional Hospital, when he had to pull over near State Road 49 and Vale Park Road. The 32-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy with no complications.
A Knox man was one of four people arrested on meth-related charges, following a Thursday morning traffic stop in Porter County. Indiana State Police say it happened around 2:00 a.m. near the State Road 49 exit off the Indiana Toll Road.
A section of State Road 49 in Porter County will be closed to through traffic for the next two weeks. Starting today, the road will be closed between U.S. 20 and U.S. 12 so crews can dig up and replace a section of roadway. Continue reading
The Indiana Department of Transportation is suspending most construction work on area highways over the Memorial Day weekend. INDOT spokesman Doug Moats says work on interstate highways and other major corridors will stop today at noon. It will pick up again Tuesday morning. Continue reading
