Starke Stellar Team Asks Community Members to Take Survey, As Letter of Intent Deadline Nears

As Starke County officials decide whether to apply for a Stellar Community designation this year, local residents are being asked to fill out a survey. It’s a way to demonstrate support from local communities to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, according to Ron Gifford with the Starke County Economic Development Foundation.

Culver Moving Ahead with Stellar Communities Projects

Plans for the Lake Maxinkuckee Bike and Walking Trail and other Stellar Community projects are moving ahead in the Town of Culver. Town Manager Jonathan Leist told the town council Tuesday that the first quarterly update meetings on the three INDOT-funded projects were held last week. Those include the Lake Maxinkuckee Trail, West Jefferson Gateway, and State Road 10 sidewalks.

Culver Town Council to Meet Tonight

The Culver Town Council will meet tonight where the council members will reorganize for 2019.  There are three new members on the council this year including Bill Githens and Bill Clevenger who were selected in the 2018 election while Rich West is filling the unexpired term of Tammy Shaffer who resigned from the council in December.

The council members are also expected to make board and commission appointments, approve the attorney’s contract and the Visitor Center contract, and approve conflict of interest statements.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist will provide an update on projects within Culver’s Stellar Communities Designation Program, and the council members will receive updates from department heads. 

The Culver Town Council members will meet at 6:30 p.m. ET tonight at the Culver Town Hall at 200 E. Washington Street. 

Culver School Board Approves OCRA Sub Agreement for Cavalier Sports Park

The Culver School Board approved an agreement related to the development of the Cavalier Sports Park Monday. Superintendent Karen Shuman says the project is part of Culver’s Stellar Community Designation. “They’re putting three soccer fields, a concession stand with restrooms, and a small toddler park, and then expanding the parking,” she told board members.

Culver School Board to Consider Debt Collection Policy Update, Cavalier Sports Park Agreement

The Culver School Board will consider an agreement regarding the Cavalier Sports Park tonight. The project will add restrooms, a concession stand, a walking trail, and more parking to a piece of school property that’s currently used for youth soccer fields. It’s part of Culver’s Stellar Community Designation.

Lieutenant Governor Discusses Regional Approach to Stellar Communities Program

The State of Indiana hopes to encourage collaboration with this year’s round of Stellar Community designations. Each year since 2011, the program has designated two cities or towns as Stellar Communities, making them eligible for millions of dollars in seed money from the state and federal government, to improve quality of life. This year, the state’s taking a slightly different approach, picking two regions, instead.

Lieutenant Governor Discusses Next Level Veterans Initiative with Culver Officials

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch meets with Culver officials and Stellar project partners before touring projects

Indiana is looking to the military to help boost its workforce. Earlier this year, the state launched its Next Level Veterans initiative to try to entice those leaving the military to move to Indiana. Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch discussed the program during her visit to Culver last week.
