The second round of the Safe Routes to School project in Culver is just getting started.
Sidewalks will be installed on the south side of Academy Street from School Street to Lake Shore and on College Avenue.
Phend and Brown was contracted to complete the work at a cost of $330,000. The Town of Culver secured grant money for this project.
A crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a proposed amphitheater in the Culver Town Park is just two weeks into the effort.
Just a few more weeks remain to raise the $30,000 needed to receive an Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority matching grant of $30,000 toward the project.
The finalists for the 2017 Stellar Communities Designation Program were announced early Thursday morning.
The Town of Culver was selected a finalist for the second consecutive year. Finalist communities are divided into two different categories based on population for the designation award. Culver will be placed into Division 2 which is for communities that have a population of 5,999 or less. Culver will compete against the Town of Churubusco in Whitley County and the City of Union City in Randolph County.
Town of Culver officials will begin taking applications for the 2017 sidewalk replacement program beginning Monday, April 3.
Measurements of the sidewalk, curb or combination of both must be included in the application. The application will be reviewed by Street Superintendent Bob Porter and his staff will confirm the dimensions of the potential project. The town council will then approve a project by recommendation of the street superintendent. The homeowner will be notified by letter if a sidewalk replacement project was selected.
The Town of Culver’s partnership with Marshall County for building and planning services officially takes effect today. The Town of Culver is planning a complete overhaul of its water plant.
Culver Town Manager David Schoeff told WKVI that town officials are working to apply for an Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) grant worth $400,000. This will help in obtaining the $1 million needed for the upgrades. The town will also apply for a state revolving loan.
Schoeff said the council members are hoping that the town is approved for the grant this year and construction can start next year.
The Culver town-wide garage sale is set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28. While there are no yard sale permits required to host a sale, there is a benefit to holding a garage sale during the town-wide yard sale dates as more people will be in the area checking out the sales. Culver Town Manager, David Schoeff, went before the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning to request the use of GIS data in the Town of Culver’s compilation of a comprehensive plan.
Houseal-Lavigne of Chicago is working with the town to develop the plan and the data needed includes parcel information. GIS data for the parcels inside town limits and the two-mile jurisdiction are requested along with some county data.
The project had most recently gone through the drainage board for their approval to work on their drains, and Schoeff said that now that they’ve received that approval, it’s just a matter of making some adjustments on the design. The project’s engineering firm, Commonwealth Engineers, is now working on those changes, and Schoeff said he expects within the next few weeks to have something to review preliminarily before it’s advertised for bids.
The storm water project carries an estimated cost of $892,000, and Schoeff said they’ve received a grant from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs for $792,000, leaving the town with a $100,000 expense. He said the town has had a lot of luck getting grants for projects like these and, hopefully, the luck will continue.

The EMS building in Culver will soon be under repairs on the eastern side of the building. EMS Director Chuck Dilts told WKVI that the drain pipe running underneath the east side of the building was found to be leaking and as a result, the drain pipe as well as a concrete wall and sidewalk above it need to be replaced.
The town of Culver is planning some improvements to their sewer system, including a new IDEM water treatment plant. The Town Council signed the permit for the construction of the plant on March 29, and they expect to have all the paperwork submitted and the project to be ready for bid within the next two weeks.
