Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding effort is not quite done yet. While the town has pulled its official support for the project, the Winamac Pool Committee will be able to continue fundraising.
A computer error and change to a particular billing procedure led to Dave Bennett of Bennett Insurance & Reality being owed a reimbursement from the Town of Winamac. On Wednesday, the Winamac Town Council reviewed the charges and acted on the refund.
Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding effort appears to have come to an end. The town council narrowly decided Wednesday not to proceed with the project until the town has the money to support the ongoing maintenance of the pool. Without the town council’s financial support, the park board followed suit Thursday, voting to stop work on the project.
The Winamac Police Department will be welcoming a new reserve officer onto their force following a decision made by the Winamac Town Council on Wednesday night. Town Marshal Michael Buchanan came before the council requesting permission to add Alec Berger to the Winamac Police Department as a non-paid reserve officer. Buchanan explained that Berger currently works as a reserve officer for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s office but he recently expressed interest in working for the Winamac Police Department.
Buchanan provided a nice recommendation for Berger, and though he said he wouldn’t be going out on calls by himself, he feels adding him would benefit the force. Continue reading
The Winamac Town Council met for a special session last night to discuss a few matters, including the future of constructing a new community pool.
Funds that were previously expected from Pulaski County are not available due to a shortfall in local income tax revenues. An account that existed for the old pool was set aside for recreational purposes once the old pool was closed. In the past, that account typically contained around $40,000 but it had to be dipped into to help balance Winamac’s budget to make up for the difference that was not received from the county.
The town did not receive the DNR LWCF grant they applied for which also set the project back. For these reasons, certain council members were questioning the practicality of going forward with the proposed pool project. Continue reading
After learning that the Town of Winamac did not receive the DNR’s Federal Land and Waterways Conservation Fund grant, Winamac Town Council members now have to consider whether or not to move forward with plans to construct a community pool. A special session was scheduled for tonight, in order to ensure that all five council members and the clerk-treasurer will be in attendance.
The special session had to be held today because not all council members will be at the regular meeting on October 16th. It is crucial that all council members are present so they’re able to contribute to the discussion and decisions that will be made regarding parks department funds and plans to build the public pool.

During the Winamac Town Council meeting last week, Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger approached the council about scheduling a special work session in order to discuss parks and recreation and the funding involved. A citizen concerned about the preservation of the Winamac Cemetery spoke up during the Winamac Town Council meeting on Monday. Kim Russell approached the council and presented her concerns about the cemetery, which she says is the oldest cemetery in Pulaski County. She said the cemetery is where many of the town’s founding fathers and ancestors are buried and feels it is our job to defend and respect their final resting place.
Members of the Winamac Town Council received a couple of updates about renovations to the new police station during their meeting Monday evening. Town Marshall Mike Buchanan said that a new building on Main Street was purchased back in January and renovations started around March. He predicts they’re approximately 4-6 weeks away from occupying the new space.
During the Town Manager report at the meeting, Brad Zellers told members all that’s left to do is ceiling, door and flooring installation, as well as work that needs done in the parking lot. Continue reading
In the Winamac Town Council meeting earlier this week, Town Manager Brad Zellers asked the council to consider changing the golf cart registration policy. The current policy requires individuals to register every two years. Zellers proposed bringing that down to one year. Continue reading
Winamac resident Nora Schambers went before Winamac Town Council members Monday night asking them to consider amending the golf cart ordinance to allow small children ride in golf carts.
In Section 3-d of Winamac’s current golf cart ordinance it states that ‘no children under 48 lbs that require a child safety restraint seat are permitted to ride on a motorized cart’. Schambers asked the council to consider replacing that section with a rule that could potentially read ‘parents or guardians will use discretion and assume all liabilities associated with the injuries sustained by a child occupant under the weight of 48 lbs during the operation of a motorized cart on public roadways in the Town of Winamac’. During their meeting last night, the Winamac Town Council acted on a zoning request for 6.2 acres on US 35 to be utilized by Pulaski County Health Foundation to construct an assisted living center. Continue reading
Pulaski County is looking to tighten its employee drug testing policy. The update would allow department heads or the county commissioners to demand a drug test based on probable cause, such as smell or behavior.

The Winamac Police Department will be adding former Medaryville police officer Sheri Gaillard to their force following a decision made by the Winamac Town Council earlier this week. Improperly parked employees could be causing problems for other businesses in Winamac. A few businesses filed complaints about employees of other businesses parking in front of their buildings, making it difficult for customers to find places to park and preventing people from accessing the businesses themselves. Last night, the Winamac Town Council hosted a public hearing Monday evening in order to discuss the the $1.5 million water project. The project will include two new ten inch wells and well houses, two river borings, and a 7,000 foot extension of the water line in order to connect it to the water plant and the new wells. According Water Department Superintendent Jeremy Beckner, both current wells are more than 100 years old and nearing the end of their lifespan. Continue reading
The Winamac Town Council is holding a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. ET in order to discuss the town water project. Last month, the council agreed to combine the $550,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs with money borrowed from the town’s Electric Depreciation Fund. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their views about the planned water upgrades and facility improvements.
The Winamac Park Board has taken steps to formalize its relationship with Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo.
Winamac Town Hall may soon be more accessible to people with disabilities. During last week’s town council meeting, council member Alvin Parish asked about installing an automatic sliding door on the front of the building.
