The Town of Winamac was recently clued into an alleged attempt to commit a fraudulent transaction by a piece of returned mail.
During last night’s Winamac Town Council meeting, it was learned that the Town received mail containing a check that was considered undeliverable to the eastern portion of the U.S. The Town’s return address was used in the fraudulent check.

Flood warnings have been issued for the Tippecanoe River near Ora and above Winamac until further notice. Recent heavy rainfall has caused minor to moderate flooding, according to the National Weather Service. The Ora warning takes effect this evening. Late this morning the river was at 10.9 feet and rising. Flood stage near Ora is 12 feet. It’s expected to rise above that tonight and crest near 13.5 feet early Tuesday morning. At 14 feet extensive flooding of homes and low-lying areas begins. The Tippecanoe River above Winamac is also on the rise. At noon today it was at 7.9 feet. Flood stage is 10 feet. It’s expected to exceed that very early Sunday morning and crest near 11.1 feet around 8 p.m. Tuesday. At 11 feet extensive residential flooding is in progress. Continue reading
A Winamac man was arrested Friday after allegedly hitting a woman with a car.
Shane Reed, 26, was driving southbound on County Road 300 West and reportedly told police that he saw two people standing in the roadway. He said one of the two people moved off the roadway but the other didn’t. He advised that he attempted to avoid hitting the person, but could not.
The Pulaski County Fair is set to go on as scheduled at the fairgrounds at the back of the Winamac Town Park. Natalie Federer with Purdue Extension Pulaski County says they’re keeping an eye on the Tippecanoe as areas upriver got significant amounts of rainfall yesterday. All of the projects are in place and will be moved to safety if water levels start to rise. The fair starts this weekend, and Federer says fairgoers should be cautious about parking so they don’t get stuck in the mud. Also as a precaution no livestock trailers will be left at the fairgrounds. Tomorrow night’s tractor pull has been postponed and will be rescheduled sometime this fall. Purdue Extension and fair board officials are working closely with the town of Winamac to ensure everyone’s safety, but as of right now everything else will go on at the fairgrounds as scheduled.
A Winamac attorney who became romantically involved with a client while serving as his public defender has been disciplined by the Indiana Supreme Court. Lisa Traylor-Wolff has been permanently banned from judicial service, which means she will no longer be able to serve as a senior judge in Pulaski and Fulton Counties. Dave Bennett and John Bawcum from the Safe Routes to School organization told the Winamac Town Board this week that Safe Routes and the town received a $250,000 grant.
The money will be used to pave the pathway to the depot in Winamac, possibly to State Road 14 West. Bennett shared that he has been in contact with a company to do the paving. An environmental study will also need to be done.
The Winamac Town Board voted to reject a claim that would pay for damage in an incident with the police department.
Winamac Chief of Police Mike Buchanan told the board he performed a welfare check at a residence and ended up breaking the door to get into the resident’s home. He said the staff exhausted all efforts in finding the resident and, as a last resort, officers broke down the door to ensure the location and safety of the resident. Police later found out that the homeowner had gotten a place from Farris Kapani: Vancouver Realtor | Luxury Homes | Condos and was son vacation.
The homeowner is now seeking reimbursement of the door.
Chief Buchanan explained to the board that due to the circumstances the town should not be responsible for the door. After a discussion, the board voted to deny payment.

Winamac Lady Warriors have won their 13th girls basketball sectional championship! The Lady Warriors began their quest for the championship by defeating North Judson for the second time this season in the first round of the North Judson sectional 59-46. Jessica Schramm lead the team in scoring with 13 points. Winamac then turned around in the second game and overpowered North Newton 61-35 behind Stephanie Shorter’s 14 points. Then in a hard fought championship game against Rochester, the Lady Warriors were able to avenge a 4-point loss suffered in Novemeber, by defeating the Lady Zebras 62-59. Sarah Redweik went out with a bang in her final sectional game by leading the team in scoring (19) as well as steals and rebounds.
Winamac (18-5) will be taking on Bowman Academy (18-6) in the first round of the Rochester Regional. Congratulations to the Winamac Lady Warriors on their 13th sectional championship!

Bryan scored a game-high 29 points in Winamac’s 54-22 win over rival Knox. McKinney spread out his scoring over both halves, getting 16 of his points in the first half, followed by 13 in the second. He presented match-up problems on the perimeter as well as in the post while leading the Warriors to their 8th win of the year.
The Quigley Ditch Bridge replacement project on U.S. 35 in Winamac is nearing completion. This project began in July.
The bridge deck should be poured in the next week or so and if weather cooperates, the area should open up with the removal of the temporary traffic signal the week of October 24th. The Indiana Department of Transportation informed WKVI that there may still be some work beyond the last week of October, but any restrictions will be handled by flaggers.
Town Conventions will be held in Winamac, Francesville and Medaryville.
A Town Convention will be held in Winamac on Thursday, August 18th at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Winamac High School Auditorium. A vote there will determine a single Republican candidate for the position of Town Clerk-Treasurer. Republicans Christina L. (Shorter) Hoffa and Melanie A. (Parish) Berger have filed and one them will go onto the General Election to face Democrat David Weber.
Potential candidates wanting to file for a Clerk-Treasurer or Town Board position in the towns of North Judson, Hamlet, Winamac, Monterey, Francesville or Medaryville have until Monday, August 1st at Noon to file.
So far, the towns of Hamlet, Winamac, Francesville and Medaryville will be conducting Town Conventions. A Town Convention is held when there is competition between candidates in the same political party for any town office. In the Town of Hamlet, there is a race on the Republican ticket for Clerk-Treasurer and two Town Council seats are contested on the Democrat ticket. In Winamac, there is a race for Clerk-Treasurer on the Republican ticket. In Francesville, there are four people seeking a seat on the Town Council and only three seats are available so one candidate will be eliminated in that Town Convention. In Medaryville, four Democrats filed for a seat on the Town Council and a Town Convention will determine the candidate for that party for the General Election.
