Fundraising Underway for Memorial Path in Hamlet Town Park

A walking path honoring a fallen soldier may soon be coming to the Hamlet Town Park. The town’s American Legion post has officially begun raising funds for a Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walking Path.

The idea was first raised during last month’s park board meeting, as a way of honoring his legacy, while also helping to pay for the trail the town has been wanting to build. During Wednesday’s town council meeting, Council President Dave Kesvormas shared a preliminary design with the other members. “I’ve got one. They’ve got, I think, a couple other proposals that they’re looking at, and they’re getting pricing, to see if this is even obtainable with the funding,” Kesvormas explained.

He noted that the Legion is lining up some potentially sizable donations. “It’s just something that we could be looking at on our own, or it could be something we do with Stellar,: he said. “It could go either way.”

Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts said the resurfacing of the town’s skate park is part of Constellation of Starke’s list of potential Stellar projects. “Our share of the Stellar grant has been paid for, so the town doesn’t have to come up with any money for that,” she added.

Constellation of Starke is one of four finalist regions for this year’s Stellar designation. The winner is scheduled to be announced in December.
