The Town of Winamac may soon be charging residents for trash pickup. The town council has discussed adding a five-dollar monthly fee as a way to keep up with increasing costs, while also making up for declining tax revenues
Council President Tom Murray noted during last month’s meeting that Winamac is one of the few towns left that doesn’t charge for trash pickup. “I don’t think five dollars a month’s going to make or break anybody, but it sure would help the town out with other things going on that we have besides that,” he said. “But, something we need to think about.”
Still, the five-dollar fee would only cover a little more than half of what the town’s getting charged, and the town’s trash removal contract calls for a three-percent increase each year. The proposed fee would bring in about $6,000 a month for the town.
Town Attorney Justin Schramm noted that residents will be given a chance to weigh in during a public hearing, before the town council can officially vote on the fee.
