Oregon-Davis School Board Approves State-Mandated Homeless Education Plan
Making sure homeless children have access to education is the goal of a plan adopted by the Oregon-Davis School Board this week. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says school corporations are required to submit a homeless education plan to the state by May 21. “The state did provide a sample plan, so we utilized that sample plan, and the board approved that,” he explains. “And then we also have to have that posted on our corporation website.”
Oregon-Davis, Knox High Schools to Stage Mock Crashes
As prom season approaches, local high schools are once again warning students of the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. The Oregon-Davis SADD chapter is holding its annual mock crash today for high school juniors and seniors. Fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and a helicopter are all expected to be on the Oregon-Davis campus, as part of the presentation.
Poll Worker’s Needlepoint Hobby Leads to Debate during Starke County Election Board Meeting
A poll worker’s needlepoint hobby led to a lengthy debate among Starke County Election Board members Wednesday. Board President Harrison Fields said he’s gotten complaints about a poll worker who’s apparently been doing needlepoint while waiting for potential voters, during in-person absentee voting hours. “I’ve had two phone calls on it, and me personally, I don’t like the looks of it, personally,” he said. “I don’t like the looks of it.”

Oregon-Davis Schedules 2018 Jump Start Program
The Oregon-Davis School Corporation has finalized the dates for summer school. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says the Jump Start program will take place from July 23 to August 3 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. “Both building principals will be getting information out to those parents very soon, so that parents get that information about Jump Start.”
Winamac Town Park Athletic Field Scheduling Difficulties Discussed with Park Board
The resurgence of Winamac’s Little League program, along with the success of Winamac High School’s softball team, have led to scheduling headaches at the Town Park. Waylon Burke with the Pulaski County Little League told the Winamac Park Board Monday the league has grown a lot over the past three years, with participation reaching levels not seen since 25 years ago.
Pulaski County Election Board Recommends Repealing County’s Rules on Campaign Signs
Rules on campaign signs have the Pulaski County Election Board calling for changes to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance. Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to send a memorandum to various county officials, calling for the repeal of the section on “special signs.”
Oregon-Davis School Board Adopts Five-Year Strategic Action Plan
The Oregon-Davis School Board has finalized a document that will guide the school corporation through the next five years. A strategic action plan for the years 2018 through 2023 was formally approved during Monday’s school board meeting, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “The whole idea is that we have a plan of attack, if you will, for where we want Oregon-Davis to go in the next five years plus,” he explains. “And we’ll be reviewing this strategic plan every year, to look at the academics and also our facilities for the corporation.”

Those looking for work will have the chance to meet with several local employers tomorrow in Knox. WorkOne Northwest Indiana and the Starke County Economic Development Foundation are teaming up to host a job fair at the Knox High School Gym.
Safety Upgrades Suggested for Winamac Town Park’s West Entrance
The Winamac Park Board is once again looking at safety upgrades for the west entrance to the Town Park. During a special meeting Monday, resident Brian Ledley told board members it’s difficult to see oncoming traffic while walking west on Main Street. He pointed out that while the street has a sidewalk, it contains steps. That makes it unsuitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
Unemployment Rates Drop in Starke, Pulaski Counties
Unemployment rates are moving lower in Starke and Pulaski counties. According to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Starke County’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.7 percent in March. That’s down from 5.4 percent the month before and 4.8 percent in March of 2017.

The Winamac Park Board discussed some of its plans for the Town Park with a small group of local residents during a public hearing Monday. Park Board President Courtney Poor explained that the board plans to apply for a federally-funded Land and Water Conservation Fund grant. “What this is for is two things,” he said. “We want to build a new restroom and we’re looking for some help for that over at the park, and we also want to completely revamp, if possible, the small children’s playground and to make it ADA-compliant, as best we can.”

Pulaski County’s bridge inspection costs are going up. Last week, Jeff Larrison with United Consulting presented the county commissioners with a draft agreement for the 2018-through-2021 bridge inspection cycle.
Pulaski County EMS Still Working to Resolve Ambulance, Staffing Issues
After months of discussions, one of Pulaski County’s ambulances will be repaired, but now another one is out of service. That’s what EMS Director Bryan Corn told the county commissioners last week. He said the ambulance that was heavily damaged in an accident on Christmas Eve was in Iowa being repaired by its original builder. “The insurance company finally gave that the go-ahead for them to fix that,” Corn said. “That truck hopefully, according to Iowa, will be back to us sometime next week.”
Absentee Voting Underway in Starke, Pulaski Counties
With Primary Election Day still over two weeks away, many voters are choosing to cast their ballots early. The Starke County Clerk’s Office says 177 in-person absentee ballots had been cast as of Friday afternoon. Another 31 had voted by mail and 11 by travel board. In Pulaski County, 96 people had voted in-person and 49 by mail, according to the Clerk’s Office.
