A dentist with a practice in North Judson has been arrested, in connection with a February crash that left one person dead. According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Jeffrey J. Bilyak, 47, of Chesterton, surrendered himself at the LaPorte County Jail Wednesday. Officers say a warrant had been issued for his arrest, following an investigation into the February 15 crash.
Pulaski Memorial Hospital will get almost $800,000 from the county’s Cumulative Building Fund for its new MRI building. The funding request was approved by the county council Monday, after the county commissioners approved it last week. It calls for the money to be paid in 17 installments between now and 2027.
The Starke County Park Board is looking to raise the rent on the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, but how exactly that will take place still has to be determined. Callahan Development, LLC’s lease on the property was discussed during Tuesday’s park board meeting. While the original 10-year lease period is up at the end of the month, the company has exercised an option to renew it for another 10 years.
Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project may require more culvert work than originally thought. The town has been working with Starke County Surveyor Bill Crase to extend the culvert at Benninghoff Ditch. That will allow a sidewalk to be added from Plymouth Street north to the trailer park and gas station.
Changes to standardized testing have Eastern Pulaski Elementary School updating its technology. The school board Monday approved the purchase of 100 Chromebooks for third, fourth, and fifth graders, according to Superintendent Dan Foster. Continue reading

Pulaski County officials hope to put an end to the confusion surrounding the county’s salary matrix, during a joint work session next week. The idea was raised during Monday’s county council and commissioners meetings. Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff and Sheriff Jeff Richwine again asked for guidance on a couple ongoing salary issues, but the council’s matrix committee still hadn’t met yet to discuss them. Council member Scott Hinkle suggested that the discussion take place with the full council and board of commissioners, instead.
The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation’s asphalt and concrete project is underway. That will mean some temporary traffic restrictions around the schools’ campus starting today, according to Superintendent Dan Foster. Continue reading
The speed limit on Pulaski County Road 1550 West has officially been lowered to 30 miles per hour in the Medaryville area, following action by the county council and commissioners Monday.
The Winamac Town Park’s “swinging bridge” could get decorative lighting along with some other upgrades, in honor of its upcoming centennial. The bridge was dedicated on July 4, 1923. Now, Greg and Brenda Henry are spearheading the effort to celebrate that history. “I think that between now and the Fourth of July of 2023, if we could maybe put something together and rededicate it, spruce it up, do some repairs, whatever needs to be done to it,” Greg told the Winamac Park Board last week. “The people that use that bridge, it’s endless. I mean I can say, I don’t know of any other landmark in Winamac that has more meaning than the swinging bridge for this town.”
As Pulaski County officials look at rearranging facilities at the Pulaski County Justice Center, a local volunteer is asking them to consider adding for a wood shop for jail inmates. Dr. Ed Hollenberg brought the idea to the county commissioners last week.

High gas prices can be blamed on the cost of crude oil and the switch to summer blend gasoline, according to GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “We’re seeing this across much of the Midwest,” he says. “We are transitioning to summer gasoline, and one of the larger refineries in the region is currently undertaking maintenance, which limits the ability to produce as much gasoline at a time of year that demand is starting to rebound. So really, those two factors, combined with oil prices that remain relatively high, are leading to higher gas prices.”
The Town of Winamac is asking residents to help clean up the Town Park. Last week, the town’s park board scheduled this year’s Town Park cleanup day for Saturday, April 28 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
The Knox City-Wide Yard Sales are a month away. They’ll be held Thursday, May 10, Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
As the income tax deadline approaches, the Indiana Department of Revenue has a few tips for avoiding refund delays. Department officials say many delays are caused by preventable errors, and an easy way to stop those from happening is to file electronically.
Pulaski County Highway Department crews will start their work days at 6:00 a.m., beginning April 23. That’s in spite of concerns raised by County Commissioner Mike McClure that it’s too dark that early.
