More pickleball courts could be in the Winamac Town Park’s future, but the town’s park board isn’t ready to give up on tennis, either. During Thursday’s meeting, Park Board President Courtney Poor said he’s heard from a couple people who’d like to see the Town Park’s remaining tennis court turned into two more pickleball courts.
Pulaski County won’t be taking any formal action on wind turbines until the end of May. County officials have been researching the topic, so they can make some recommendations about how to adjust the county’s Unified Development Ordinance going forward.
Upgrades to the Winamac Town Park’s restrooms and toddler playground may get some financial support from this year’s round of Land and Water Conservation Fund grants. Last year, the town’s park board applied for $200,000 for its swimming pool rebuilding project. It wasn’t selected, but officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources say it would have a good chance this year, according to park board member Pat Bawcum. The problem is that the town has decided not to pursue the project for the time-being, due to concerns that money wouldn’t be available to operate the pool if it’s built.
The Starke County Youth Club’s annual radiothon is less than a month a way. It’s a chance for residents to help the organization continue to provide its after-school, summer, and recreational programs across the county. “We’re usually there after school for three hours, making sure kids have a safe place to be, making sure they get help with their homework and their academic needs,” says Executive Director Irene Szakonyi, “and then expanding on that, so kids get exposure to other cultures. They learn about technology and robotics, and maybe they’re even learning to cook and having a workforce readiness or life skill.” Continue reading
A temporary speed limit on Pulaski County Road 1550 West near Medaryville could become permanent. The County Highway Department has lowered the speed limit to 30 miles per hour between 150 North and 300 North, while nearby U.S. 421 is closed for a bridge replacement.
The Culver Community Schools Corporation is keeping an eye on a proposed housing development. A 71-acre development is planned for the area just west of the school corporation’s property, on the east side of State Road 17.

Upgrades to the Winamac Town Park’s restrooms and toddler playground will be discussed during tonight’s park board meeting. Winamac officials have been working to replace the park’s main restrooms with larger facilities with more room for wheelchairs.
Two Starke County residents will have to pay back thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits they fraudulently collected, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. In a press release, the department says local courts have recently found three people guilty of unemployment insurance fraud.
Pulaski County is looking to get some federal help to repair flood damage. Representatives from FEMA and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security met with various local officials last week, according to Pulaski County EMA Director Sheri Gaillard. “We really don’t have any information. They couldn’t tell us if we met the threshold or not,” she told the county commissioners Monday. “They just went over our dollar amounts and praised us for our documentation. Everything was good there. The next step is to turn it over to the governor to see if the State of Indiana meets the threshold. If we’ve met the threshold, they will then give all that information to FEMA.”
Hoosiers planning to attend college or trade school this fall have just a few more days to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It needs to be filed by Sunday, April 15 in order to qualify for both state and federal grants, scholarships, and loans. The form can be found online at www.fafsa.gov.
Drug-related crimes kept Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputies busy this past weekend, according to Sheriff Jeff Richwine. “They served some search warrants, found a pretty big meth house,” he told the county commissioners Monday. “There were like 13 what they call one-pot labs in there. It took the State Police drug team almost seven hours to clean that mess up, and they arrested one or two people out of that. And then they got another person up at Monterey that was definitely selling meth.”
The Pulaski County Community Development Commission will present its annual update on the county’s economy next week. The 2018 Pulaski County Economic Development Summit will be held Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. EDT at the former Monterey Elementary School.
A locally-based agricultural services dealer is being recognized by an equipment manufacturer. Chester, Inc. of North Judson has been named a “Valley Performance Dealer” by Valley Irrigation.
The Pulaski County Farmers’ Market continues to expand. Rather than alternating between Winamac and Francesville each week, a weekly market will be held in both communities this year. “This year, they will be every Saturday in Winamac and every Thursday evening in Downtown Francesville,” Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer told the county commissioners last week. “So they’re expanding the opportunities for the market, and they’ll just be consistently in Winamac on Saturdays.”
The Knox Community School Corporation has reason to be hopeful about its future enrollment numbers. Elementary School Principal Glenn Barnes says about 96 children attended the school’s recent kindergarten roundup. He told the school board last week that number’s a little higher than it’s been in past years.
The fate of one of Pulaski County’s ambulances remains up in the air. The ambulance was significantly damaged in an accident on Christmas Eve.
