The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is putting the finishing touches on its plan for the next five years. A strategic action plan for the years 2018 through 2023 was presented to the school board on first reading Monday by Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “What I’ve tried to do is put a plan in place, just so we can explain to our patrons, so we as the board kind of know what our vision is for our student body and then also know where, financially, we’re going with our facilities,” he explained.

Pulaski County Unified Development Ordinance Creates Confusion for Campaign Signs
Campaign sign regulations are causing confusion for Pulaski County candidates. The county’s updated Unified Development Ordinance that took effect at the beginning of the year appears to include some rules for campaign signs, but no one’s entirely sure, according to election board member Laura Bailey. “We have had, in the last 10 days, multiple contacts from concerned citizens, which then went out to various candidates, had all sorts of panic with the candidates because of the Unified Development Ordinance that you guys passed on December 18,” she told the county commissioners Monday. Oregon-Davis School Board Approves 2018-2019, 2019-2020 School Calendars
The Oregon-Davis School Board approved school calendars for the next two school years Monday. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman explained the 2018-2019 calendar will mostly be the same as this year’s. “First student day will be August 9,” he said. “Christmas break will be very similar, which will be a split Christmas break. Christmas break will start on Thursday, December 20; students will return on Thursday, January 3. Spring break will be the week of March 25. Scheduled right now, the last student day is May 23.”

Pulaski County Council Approves Budget Transfer to Help Cover Circuit Court Overtime Costs
Overtime costs continue to add up for Pulaski Circuit Court. The Pulaski County Council voted Monday to transfer $5,000 into the court’s overtime budget from the law books line item, at the request of Judge Michael Shurn. “Last week, a two-day jury trial morphed into a four-day one,” he explained. “And I was working 16-hour days, and my staff was real close to that.”

The Winamac High School Art Department has gotten a $1,000 financial boost, thanks to the local chapter of Psi Iota Xi. The philanthropic sorority says the donation is meant to benefit or enhance students’ art experience, under the direction of teacher Natalie Dickinson.

Pulaski Council Updated on Courthouse Elevator Replacement, Lawn Care and Snow Removal Costs
Preparations continue for the replacement of the Pulaski County Courthouse elevator. Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston told the county council Monday the project is going well. “All the material has been ordered,” he said. “The demolition is going to actually begin the end of this month, the last week of this month.”
Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum May Consider Leasing Erie Trail to Starke County
Bringing the North Judson Erie Trail under Starke County’s control is something the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum might be willing to consider. The museum owns the trail, but Starke County’s five-year park plan suggests that the county lease it and operate it as a park facility. Starke County Park Board President Roger Chaffins said Tuesday that he spoke with the museum’s president, Cory Bennett, and Bennett seemed open to resuming discussions.
