Knox School Board Approves Purchase of Five School Buses

The Knox school bus fleet is getting a major upgrade. Last week, the school board approved the purchase of five vehicles, totaling just under $400,000. Those include two 78-passenger Bluebird buses for just under $188,000, and a 48-passenger Bluebird handicap bus for nearly $101,000. Knox schools will also be getting two 14-passenger Starcraft minibuses for a total of just over $110,000.

Pulaski County Commissioners Agree to Try Selling Land in Monterey Resorts Area

Pulaski County will try to sell some county-owned land in the Monterey Resorts area. The county commissioners approved a contract Monday with SRI, to sell various parcels in the area. “They will do a commissioners’ deed sale and do all of the properties at one time, take care of everything, for 15 percent of what they collect,” County Attorney Kevin Tankersley explained.

Two Men Reportedly Shot Friday Morning in Rural Fulton County Near Culver

Police say two men were injured in a shooting near Culver early Friday. It happened near the area of State Road 17 and Fulton County Road 700 North, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department. Officers say a 911 call came in shortly after midnight from a man who said he’d been shot near a home in the area. When responders arrived, they say they also found a second man who’d been shot at a residence on State Road 17.

Pulaski County EMS Denies 11 Ambulance Transfers in February, Due to Staffing Issues

Pulaski County EMS still doesn’t have enough paramedics to handle all the ambulance transfer requests from Pulaski Memorial Hospital. EMS Director Bryan Corn told the county commissioners Monday that his department took five transfers during the month of February, but ended up denying 11. He said most of those denials were due to staffing issues.

Personality-Based Substance Abuse Prevention Program Coming to Knox, Oregon-Davis High Schools

Preventing substance abuse by identifying those who are most at risk before they develop an addiction is the goal of a program coming to two Starke County high schools. This week, the Knox and Oregon-Davis school boards learned about the PreVenture program. Indianapolis-based nonprofit Overdose Lifeline received funding from the Division of Mental Health and Addiction to offer the program in seven Indiana counties, including Starke, Pulaski, and LaPorte.

Knox Elementary School Gets $40,000 Grant for New Playground Equipment

Knox Elementary School’s playground equipment will be getting some major upgrades, thanks to Lowe’s Operation Playground grant of more than $40,000. Representatives from the Plymouth Lowe’s store presented a giant check to the Lil’ Redskins Booster Club and other school officials during Thursday’s Basketball Bonanza event. That, along with $16,000 raised by the booster club, will be used to replace the west end playground used by first and second graders.

Wisconsin Man Arrested After Allegedly Driving 160 Miles Per Hour on Indiana Toll Road

Driving 160 miles per hour on the Indiana Toll Road landed a Wisconsin man in the LaPorte County Jail Tuesday evening, according to Indiana State Police. Trooper Dustin Eggert says he saw a Dodge Challenger Hellcat pass him at a high rate of speed heading east and then weave through traffic without using turn signals.

Oregon-Davis School Board Accepts Woodworking Tools from Knox Community School Corporation

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation’s wood shop class is getting some additional equipment. The school board voted Monday to accept a donation of woodworking tools from the Knox Community School Corporation, at the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “It’s just going to help our woods program as it’s expanded under Mr. Henigsmith’s leadership,” Harman said. “So again, this is a great partnership, if you will, that the two corporations are working together.”

Pulaski Highway Department’s Planned 6:00 a.m. Start Time Questioned by County Commissioner

A Pulaski County commissioner wants the county’s highway department to do most of its work during daylight hours. Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff asked the commissioners Monday to approve his department’s seasonal switch to a work week of four 10-hour days.

Knox Fifth Grade Class May Be Moving to Middle School

The Knox Community School Corporation is looking into moving the fifth grade from the elementary school to the middle school. “There is a rumor going around that fifth grade is moving, possibly, to the middle school, and I want to say that yes, that rumor is true,” Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart told the school board Tuesday. “We have lots of rumors that go around and that one we are looking at, based upon our facilities study by Schmidt.”
