Knox Harvest Days Committee Working on This Year’s Festival

It might be a few months off but Tony Radkiewicz, Sr. and the Harvest Days Committee are gearing up for another “bang up” weekend.

Bands this year will include: The Rolling Jones, Marbin Blues, PS 150, Night Shift, and Groupies Wanted.

Radkiewicz also announces that a Harvest Festival Talent Show is being planned for the Sunday of the Festival. They are looking for any reasonable type of talent from singers, magicians, dog acts, or comedy acts. The sky’s the limit. Knox and North Judson-San Pierre Teams Participate in Starke County Drug Free Double Dare Competition

The Starke County Drug Free Double Dare Challenge was held Sunday, at the Knox Middle School. Four teams from Knox and North Judson-San Pierre competed. The High School team, The Confused, from North Judson-San Pierre won the challenge with 310 points. The Orange Dinosaur team from North Judson-San Pierre Middle School came in second, the Blue Man Group from Knox Middle School was third and the 7 Musketeers from Knox Middle School was fourth. They all did a great job in answering questions about drugs and the dangers of drugs. If either team did not know the answer to a question, they participated in a variety of physical challenges. Two injured in Three Car Accident in Front of Knoll Brothers Truck Stop

Three vehicles were involved in an accident in front of the Knoll Brothers Truck Stop in Starke County at about 7:23 p.m. CT Friday, April 1st.

According to Starke County police, Charles Peterson, of Dysart, Iowa, was crossing the median into the parking lot pulling an oversized load. His trailer was just short of clearing the westbound lanes when Virginia Doenges, of South Whitley, Indiana, crashed into the middle axle of the trailer. Peterson continued into the parking lot and stopped. Doenges was incapacitated and could not be questioned about the crash; However, a witness told police that she never slowed down and crashed into the axle of the trailer and then spun around, coming to rest with no lights on in the middle of both westbound lanes. A third driver, Jamshid Nazari, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, never saw Doenges’ vehicle and was unable to avoid striking the car in the front right fender. A witness told police that Nazari never slowed to avoid the crash. Police Recover Stolen Vehicle; Driver Arrested

A Knox man was arrested this week after police found him driving a stolen vehicle.

According to the police report, on March 24th, Rolland McVey, of Knox, reported his truck stolen. He was sitting at his kitchen table when two male subjects came walking into his kitchen from his back room. He asked them how they got in and they said their daughter had been bitten by a dog. McVey said he doesn’t own a dog and he got up from the table and started walking toward them. They turned around and took off running out the back door. He later he looked out and saw his truck missing. His keys were missing from the key hook that hangs next to the back door.  The vehicle is a 1997 teal-colored Ford pick-up truck.

Starke County Police Arrest Monon Man on Burglary Charges after Traffic Stop

A White County man was arrested Thursday night after police found alleged stolen property in his car.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to intercept a vehicle that was being driven by a male subject that was reported to be harassing a Knox woman into selling a vehicle. The officer intercepted the vehicle at U.S. 35 and Toto Road and found the vehicle to have false and fictitious plates. A traffic stop was conducted where the driver, John Grigsby, was found to have a suspended license.

Manhunt in Pulaski County Nets Arrest

An Idaville, Indiana man was arrested after a two day manhunt in Pulaski County.

On Monday, March 28th at 10:09 p.m. ET, Pulaski County Deputy Ryan Austin stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of County Roads 700 West and County Road 500 South. The passenger immediately exited and fled on foot into the darkness. The driver, Jacqueline S. Mayhill, 31, of Monticello, was taken into custody and arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine. The passenger was identified as Charles Douglas Warren, age 47, of Idaville, and was not immediately captured. A manhunt using K-9s was eventually called off at 1:30 a.m.

Cock Fighting Attendees Handed Sentences in Knox City Court

Thirty-three cock fight enthusiasts were sentenced in Knox City Court Thursday. The men were charged with a misdemeanor count of Attending an Animal Fighting Contest. They attended a cock fight in Starke County in February.

Judge Charles Hasnerl fined the men $200 apiece, plus $180 in restitution to the Starke County Humane Society for putting the roosters down, and $164 in court costs.  Each individual was also given a 12 month suspended sentence.

Starke County Drug Free Double Dare Event this Sunday

Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oreon-Davis students in grades 6-12 will be competing in the annual Drug Free Double Dare event Sunday, April 3rd at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Knox Middle School.

“Drug Free Double Dare is based on the concept of the Nickelodeon Double Dare,” explained Knox Middle School Guidance Counselor, Chris Ross. “We give it an anti-drug twist. The students received a study guide with information about different types of drugs. On Sunday, the students will then answer questions based on what they’ve studied.”

Starke Circuit Court Judge Rejects Plea Agreement for Kimberly Hitchens; Trial Set for April 8th

Kimberly Hitchens appeared in Starke Circuit Court Wednesday morning for a plea hearing. Hitchens was reportedly involved in events surrounding the Bass Lake shooting incident with Starke County police that also involved Michael Drogosz and John Brooke. She has been charged with Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, two counts of Possession/Manufacturing of a Destructive Device (aiding), and Assisting a Criminal.

Starke County Food Inspector Reports Several Infractions after Inspections

David Kesvormas, the Starke County Contract Food Inspector, issued a report covering the first few weeks of his job. As of March 17th, Kesvormas had completed 26 inspections.

Infractions found included: Refrigeration doors not closing properly or not sealing due to defective seals, labeling and dating, cross contamination (meaning raw meat stored over items that are ready to eat), missing thermometers, inaccurate chemical sanitizer test equipment, and general cleaning and sanitizing.

Knox-Center Township Fire Department Responds to Call at St. Thomas Acquinas School

Knox fire crews were called to a fire at the St. Thomas Acquinas school

The Knox-Center Township Fire Department responded to a call at the St. Thomas Acquinas School Tuesday morning.

“One the ballasts in the fluorescent lights went bad in one of the classrooms,” explained Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost.

The school houses the Head Start program and the students were removed.

Lisa Owens Appears on ‘Breaking Down the Bars’ Program; Starke County Prosecutor Details Her Early Release

America got it’s first extensive look at Lisa Owens last night on the OWN Network show, “Breaking Down the Bars.” Owens, who is serving a Voluntary Manslaughter sentence at the Rockville Correctional Facility, is due to be released in May under a sentence modification.

Owens was convicted of killing her husband Jeff in their Knox home in 2001. She was sentenced to 40 years.

Representative Dembowski Talks about Return to the Statehouse after Standoff

The Indiana Democrats are back in their seats this week after a walkout that began on February 21st. Both sides are claiming victory in the standoff. Republicans said the Democrats returned after hearing from Hoosiers that they were unhappy with their walkout.  Democrats said the Republicans were forced to make changes to bills because the public hadn’t understood Governor Daniels’ radical agenda until the slowdown.
