Starke County Household Hazardous Waste Days Coming Up

 

Starke County residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste Friday and Saturday at the county highway garage north of Knox.

Friday’s collection event will take place from 3 until 5 p.m. Residents can dispose of up to four tires for free over the course of the two-day event. Any tire that’s 54 inches or larger must be quartered, or a $75 fee per tire will be charged. Continue reading

North Judson Residents Killed, Injured in Porter County Crash

A two-vehicle collision in Porter County last night claimed the lives of three North Judson residents and sent a fourth to a Chicago hospital.

It happened on State Road 8 in Boone Township, according to information from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say eastbound traffic was stopped in front of a driveway at 319 West State Road 8 waiting for a vehicle to turn left into a driveway. Continue reading

North Judson Council Approves Water and Sewer Rate Hikes

Water and sewer rate hikes were approved by the North Judson Town Council Monday. The average sewer bill will go up 25 percent or just over nine dollars, according to accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates. Water bills will increase by 30 percent or $4.60, on average. Knox Community School Board Educated on eLearning

The Knox Community School Corporation will incorporate eLearning in the next school year. This will be an opportunity for students to be able to keep the stream of learning ongoing even if there is a day of school canceled due to inclement weather.

Director of Curriculum and Instruction Peggy Shidaker informed the board that the administrative team has put together plans for students to participate in an eLearning day.
She explained that the students will know what is expected of them on an eLearning day.
Learning targets will be posted online by 9 a.m. on a canceled day and by 10 a.m. on a delay day. Shidaker said students will be expected to cover content that would have been addressed if school had been in session for the day. Lessons will be a continuation of what’s been happening in the classroom.

Winamac Park Board Seeks Public Input on Veterans Memorial Park Upgrades

Winamac artist Greg Hildebrandt drew this rendering of the proposed bench and sign placement for the park board.

The Winamac Park Board is looking for the public’s input on proposed upgrades to Veterans Memorial Park. Board members have been considering the addition of a decorative archway, and the VFW and American Legion have each offered to donate a bench. On top of that, the American Legion has offered to place its cannon in the park, should it decide to sell its current building.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Releases More Information on Three Weekend Crashes

 

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is still putting the pieces together, after a series of crashes kept deputies busy over the weekend. On Sunday, police responded to County Road 950 West, after a vehicle apparently crashed into a barricade where the road dead ends at Interstate 94. A man with serious head injuries was found lying next to the car.
