LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department Reports Additional Overdoses

 

The recent spike in heroin overdoses in LaPorte County has authorities there on high alert. LaPorte County EMS ambulance crews have responded to 18 overdoses in the past week. Of those, 15 involved heroin and three involved synthetic marijuana. EMS officials treated 11 of those patients with 17 doses of Narcan. They say six patients received multiple doses of the medication. Continue reading

Knox Set to Proceed with Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvement Funding

The City of Knox is ready to apply for a federal grant and loan to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant.

Much of the infrastructure is more than 20 years old and no longer runs efficiently. At a minimum the city is looking at upgrades to the headworks to better deal with grit removal and screening. The necessary equipment carries an estimated cost of $500,000, according to a study done last year for the city. Improvements to the aeration side of the plant are also proposed. Continue reading

Community Input Sought on Plan for Older Adults

Starke County residents will have an opportunity Monday to weigh in on a proposed two-year plan to meet the needs of local older adults. Community Services of Stake County and Northwest Indiana Community Action are hosting a feedback forum to gather input from caregivers and other stakeholders. They want to hear about the needs of older adults as well as any barriers to accessing those services. Continue reading

Pulaski County Commissioners Move Toward County Home Sale

Pulaski County officials are close to deciding how to dispose of the former Pleasant View Rest Home. CDC Executive Director Nathan P. Origer says the property has been split into two parcels to separate the actual home from the barn and REACT building, which are still used by the county. Eastern Pulaski School Board Selects Additional Projects to Tackle with Leftover Renovation Funds

 

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation may soon be upgrading its parking lots and cafeteria facilities, with funds left over from its recent renovation project. School board members and administrators have been putting together a list of improvements they’d like to see with the remaining $1.6 million. The school board met Tuesday to narrow down that list and decide which projects will move ahead. Continue reading
