At Monday night’s Culver School Board meeting, Superintendent Karen Shuman told members that renovations to the cafeteria at the Middle/High School are officially complete.
She stated that the flooring and furnishing portion of the cafeteria project cost about $90,000 and was paid for with bond funds.
Shuman also shared that there is a little more than $300,000 worth of bond funds leftover that must be spent prior to the end of the fiscal year in December. Continue reading
The Town of Hamlet is switching its trash pickup provider. The town council Wednesday approved a two-year contract with Local Affordable Disposal of Hanna.
While discussing new business during Tuesday night’s Knox Planning Commission meeting, Planning Administrator Kenny Pfost alerted members of a request he received about the Henry F. Schricker House.
Pfost said a representative asked him about installing a sign in the front yard of the Henry F. Schricker House on Main Street. Under the current sign ordinance, they would be limited to a 2×2 sign because it is in a residential area. Continue reading
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department will have a third K9 unit.
Sheriff Bill Dulin asked the Starke County Commissioners for permission to officially approve the addition to the department Monday night.
The Pulaski County Courthouse elevator is another step closer to getting replaced. On Monday, the county commissioners chose TL Kincaid Contracting to build the new elevator for $489,000.
The amphitheater for Norwayne Field in North Judson has been delivered and its size called for alternative storage options to be utilized.
Initially, the plan was to temporarily store it in the park garage, but at Monday’s town council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe stated that it was a bit too big for that. The West Central School Board discussed enrollment and the number of transfer students coming into the corporation.
The Town of Francesville may be looking into adding a park board. Clerk-Treasurer Linda Bennett says the idea was brought to the town council Monday by a representative from the UpTown Project. “They asked about maybe getting a park board, so that, maybe, we could get some grants,” Bennett explains. “And that will be looked into. We’re going to contact some other towns to see what theirs is.”
Some confusion over bid specifications led to drastically different offers being opened at the Knox Board of Works meeting on Monday.
The bids were for demolition work on the blighted structure at 202 N. Pearl Street.
The first bid that was opened came in from Jackson Truck and Excavating and it was for $33,900. The second bid was from Mark Milo Enterprises for $14,900. The reason for the difference was that Jackson included the price for asbestos removal, while Milo did not. Continue reading
Culver School Board members held a 2-hour work session prior to their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night.
Superintendent Karen Shuman stated that the work session was to go over policies and to discuss a strategic plan for the school corporation. “We’ve just started looking at creating the goals and objectives and then creating action steps.” Continue reading
Knox Planning Commission members voted to hold a public hearing over a requested zoning change when they met Tuesday night.
When discussing potential zoning changes, Tim Miller, the owner of Royal Star Builders, addressed the board members. He said he’s interested in having a property that he purchased at 409 Pacific Avenue rezoned from residential to commercial. Continue reading
Indiana’s attorney general is urging Hoosiers to be on the lookout for tax fraud. Identity thieves can use other people’s social security numbers to file fraudulent tax returns and keep refunds for themselves.
Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, February 2nd, the Indiana State Police was called to Starke Hospital in Knox to conduct an investigation into the death of an inmate.
According to the initial investigation by ISP Detective Brian Kubiak, during processing into the Starke County Jail, 41-year-old Steven Richie, of North Judson, reportedly removed a clear plastic baggie from his pants pocket, containing an unknown white chalky substance, and allegedly put it into his mouth. The Pulaski County Coroner’s Office remains busy. Coroner John Behny gave an update on his department’s efforts to the county commissioners Monday.
Knox Board of Works members approved a recommendation from Police Chief Harold Smith during a special meeting Monday morning.
Chief Smith’s recommendation pertained to hiring Seth Johnson as a patrolman for the police department. He explained that out the 30 applications that were issued, 9 were returned. Out of the 9 that came back, the list was narrowed down to 4 finalists. However, none of the final 4 passed background checks.
Since none of the applicants were suitable, Chief Smith suggested adding former Starke County Sheriff’s Department officer Seth Johnson to the force. Continue reading
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin presented the county commissioners with a proposed job description for an employee at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff previously explained that he hired Ron Lawson as a part-time jailer but he doesn’t necessarily do the duties of a jailer. He hired him in that position because the wage was at a higher rate. Lawson has 34 years of law enforcement experience and the sheriff believed that Lawson should be paid a higher wage because of his experience.
No significant cuts are anticipated in this year’s budget for the West Central School Corporation.
At Monday night’s North Judson Town Council meeting, members of the community and the council wished Reserve Officer Scott Beishuizen and his K-9 Gunner farewell.
Town Marshal Kelly Fisher presented the team with a plaque and thanked them both for their service with the department and their commitment to the community. The town council shook hands with Officer Beishuizen and he issued a statement expressing his gratitude. Continue reading
Design work continues on new restrooms for the Winamac Town Park. A preliminary architectural drawing was presented to the park board last week.
