Starke County Sheriffs Department officers were called to a one vehicle roll-over accident on U.S. 35 north of State Road 8 (north) this morning.
The driver of the vehicle, Chantel Box, 25, of Knox, was northbound on U.S. 35 when she lost control of her vehicle causing it to go off the roadway and overturn on the eastside of U.S. 35.
Knox-Center Township Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, has been giving us fire prevention tips this week in observance of National Fire Prevention Week. Today, he talks a little about the Fire Department:

Knox-Center Township Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, has another fire prevention tip in honor of National Fire Prevention Week.
“Never leave your home with candles burning,” said Pfost. “We’ve had a lot of fires where people leave home and they forget to put a candle out. Keep them away from curtains.”
The Knox City Council meeting began last night with a heated exchange initiated by Republican City Council candidate, Thom Morin. Morin charged impropriety in his opponent being able to campaign at the Knox Center-Township Volunteer Fire Department annual pancake breakfast Sunday morning.
Donald Kring, the Democrat candidate, said following the meeting that he only did what has traditionally been done at community events in the past when he placed campaign material on the tables. He said he asked for permission before the breakfast began and was informed that all candidates could avail themselves of the opportunity if they so desired.
Knox residents are reminded that a burning ordinance is in effect. It is unlawful to maintain any form of leaf burning or wood burning of any kind, on private or public property.
The Police Department will issue a warning notice to a first time violator, then a $50 citation will be issued. Each separate offense shall be considered a separate violation.
National Fire Prevention Week is this week and Knox-Center Township Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, has this fire prevention tip.
“Keep paper, dish towels and other combustibles away from the stove top,” he urged. “Some people have paper towel dispensers below the cabinets and it is recommended that a toaster is not placed underneath that dispenser.”
Pfost said it’s important to have house numbers visible so firefighters can find your home in case of a fire.
The North Judson Town Board approved a resolution to allow a trade of equipment between the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department and the Knox-Center Township Fire Department. The North Judson Department will get a 1980 Ford pumper truck with a 750 gallon tank and in exchange, Knox will receive an air bag system that is capable of lifting up vehicles to help in emergency situations. The Knox City Council members approved a similar resolution at their recent meeting.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department fought a fire at Judy Sinn’s residence at 5655 E. 250 N. in Knox yesterday morning.
Fire Chief Ken Pfost told WKVI that a representative from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office determined it was accidental. The fire started in a recessed light fixture in the kitchen. Over $75,000 in damage was done and no injuries were reported at the scene.
The Knox-Center Township and North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Departments have agreed to a swap of equipment. In the swap, North Judson would receive a 1980 Ford Pumper truck with a 750 gallon tank and Knox would receive an air bag system that is approximately six to seven years old.
Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Chief, Ken Pfost, explained to the City Council members that the air bag system new would cost approximately $10,000.
Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department were called to a single vehicle rollover Wednesday afternoon on U.S. 35 just north of 300 North.
The driver, Douglas Kline, 67, of Granger, Indiana, told police that he was traveling north on U.S. 35 and he must have dozed off. The vehicle left the roadway and flipped in a ditch on the west side of the road. Kline suffered minor injuries in the accident. He was transported to IU Health Starke Hospital for treatment.
An accident last week left a Knox driver injured. Christopher Deem, of Binkley Drive, left the roadway on 300 East, near State Road 8. Because of his injuries, Deem was unable to give a statement as to why he left the roadway, striking a tree. For a time he was trapped in his vehicle and was extricated by the Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department held its 100th Anniversary celebration over the weekend and the festivities included an equipment and apparatus parade Sunday afternoon. Several fire departments from the area participated in the parade.
In 1911, the Knox Fire Department came into existence. The first Fire Chief went on to become the Governor of Indiana. Knox’s first Fire Chief was none other than Henry F. Schricker.
To celebrate the 100 year Anniversary of the Fire Department, the current volunteer firemen are planning a huge celebration.
It all begins Saturday morning with an 11:00 a.m. corn and sausage roast dinner at the Southside Firehouse. Inside you’ll find various memorabilia and photos to view.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department is celebrating 100 years of service to our community this year. Founded in 1911, the Department replaced a citizen bucket brigade made up of business owners and residents of the Knox area.
To commemorate this anniversary, the Department has designed a new logo. The members of the department wanted the logo to include aspects that were both old and new and something unique to the Knox Fire Department. The background is the very traditional Red Maltese Cross, with the Knox-Center Township moniker, as well as the gold “100” in the center. One of the most unique aspects of the department are the yellow fire trucks, thus the “Yellow Jacket” sporting fire attire and wielding a water hose and fireman’s ax.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department recently purchased a boat for river rescues and Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, said it was used during the rescue attempt Sunday morning.
A car caught fire in the McDonald’s parking lot in Knox this morning. No injuries were reported and the Knox-Center Township Fire Department responded to the scene. The car was owned by Bill Wallace. There is no report yet on how the fire started.
James Childress III, of Rolling Prairie, was arrested by Knox City Police Wednesday after an accident and a brief foot pursuit from police.
According to the police report, Childress was reportedly driving his vehicle in the Giles Court area and went off the road a hit a tree. Childress fled on foot. The vehicle caught fire in the engine area after the incident and the fire was extinguished by the Knox-Center Township Fire Department. The vehicle displayed false and fictitious plates.
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department was called to a fire at Sibo’s Grill, north of Knox on U.S. 35 shortly after 2:00 a.m. this morning.
According to Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, an electrical issue started the fire in the facility. The building was not a total loss, but it did suffer extensive heat and smoke damage. Thousands of dollars in damage was done to the facility.
The Bass Lake Fire Department was called to a house fire at 6560 S. State Road 10 at Bass Lake. Fire Chief, Les Jensen, told WKVI that the two-story brick home was a total loss. The Fire Department battled the blaze for about 45 minutes before it came under control. Jensen said the home was a summer home owned by an Illinois resident. Residents were tearing down a house at 2323 E. 480 N. outside of Hamlet Wednesday afternoon when a fire started and got out of control.
According to Hamlet Fire Chief, Bob Goetz, scrap from the destruction of an abandoned house on the property started on fire. The fire got out of control and spread to a garage. The Hamlet Fire Department responded to the scene as well as the Knox-Center Township Fire Department and the fire was extinguished. Minimal damage was reported to the garage. There were no injuries reported.
