The Knox Planning Commission welcomed a new member during their meeting Tuesday night.
Mayor Dennis Estok appointed Jim Strong to the commission and he is filling Steve Dodge’s seat. His term will end on December 31st, 2019.
Commission President Greg Matt said that Strong resigned from the BZA to be on the Planning Commission, leaving a vacancy on that board. Mayor Estok explained that with Strong switching over to the Planning Commission, there are now two open seats on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Continue reading

Commission Vice President John Wilson said he found a definition for accessory buildings, stating that they are essentially any outdoor structure that is detached. The Knox Planning Commission will conduct a hearing this evening on a zoning request for a parcel of property in the Knox Industrial Park. Traffic Control Specialists wants to build a new facility on 16 acres of land at the corner of 250 East and 50 South/Pacific Avenue. The land is currently zoned residential and must be rezoned to Mechanical/M1 in order to establish an economic revitalization area at the corner. Knox officials are looking toward spring. They encourage contractors interested in participating in the city’s Residential/Business Sidewalk Replacement Program to register with the city.
Contractors need to go to the Knox Planning Commission office at 101 West Washington Street between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until April 10. Proof of insurance must be provided.
The two-year long discussion on the outdoor storage ordinance in the city of Knox could come to a close soon.
The Knox City Council voted last night to reject the plan commission’s outdoor storage ordinance as it doesn’t have wording to allow for special use.
The council members were not settled on a certain setback of an outdoor display at a business. The 25-foot setback was what needed to be changed and the council members were trying to decide the best way to go about that change.
The Knox City Council approved an ordinance revising fees for the Planning Commission this week on its second reading, leaving just one more reading to be approved for the ordinance to take effect. Mayor Rick Chambers told the city council that he recently met with Charles Weaver, executive director of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation, to discuss the proposed maximum commercial permit fee of up to $7500.
Two representatives are needed to serve on the Knox Planning Commission for a four-year term. One representative is needed to serve on the Knox Park Board.

After more than a month without a planning commissioner, the City of Knox Planning Commission last night made their appointment for the position. Greg Matt was not re-appointed to the position on Jan. 1, and a debate has been ongoing between Mayor Rick Chambers and the Planning Commission over who has the authority to appoint the planning commissioner.
