House Fire Claims One Life

One person could not be saved after resuscitation efforts were attempted in the middle of a house fire in La Porte this morning.

Emergency responders and firefighters were called to 111 Maple Drive just after 7 a.m. CT after a neighbor reporting seeing smoke coming from the residence.

La Porte City firefighters arrived on the scene and found flames coming from the two-story home with heavy smoke, according to the report. The same report indicates that firefighters made their way into the home and discovered a man laying approximately 10 feet from the doorway. The firefighters attempted resuscitation efforts, but were not successful. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released pending family notification.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Two Vehicle, Single Fatality Crash Along U.S. Hwy 20

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday, deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s office were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash that occurred on US Highway 20 at the intersection of Range Road in rural Kankakee Township.

A media advisory explained that Kankakee Township Firemen were the first to arrive on the scene and they determined that the driver of a Honda passenger car involved in the accident was unresponsive. Continue reading

La Porte Emergency Responders Investigate Fatal Crash

 

A single vehicle crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old man Wednesday afternoon.

La Porte County police say a car driven by Cody Strauch was traveling west on U.S. 20 and went off the north side of the road and stuck a tree in the 7400 E. block of U.S. 20 near New Prairie High School. After the impact, the vehicle spun off into the yard for approximately 30 feet, according to the report. Continue reading

Trail Creek Man Surrenders Himself to Police

A Trail Creek man suspected of aggravated battery turned himself into police on Friday, Nov. 3.

According to the Trail Creek Police Department, Gordon R. Gardner threw a bottle of alcohol at a female patron while he was a bartender at Decoy’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Trail Creek. The alleged incident that left the woman injured happened at 2:20 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 29. Continue reading

La Porte Police, Bomb Squad Investigate Reported Explosive Device at Residence

La Porte Police and the Porter County Bomb Squad reportedly found an explosive device at a residence in the 700 block of F. St., in La Porte late Wednesday afternoon.

La Porte police detectives were able to secure a search warrant after police received information about a person in possession of explosive material at the home. Officers from the La Porte City Police Department and the La Porte County Emergency Response Team took Eric R. Weiler into custody without incident.

Bicyclist Dies after Accident with Semi

 

A 53-year-old Hammond man died after he reportedly rode his bicycle into the path of an oncoming semi truck.

On Monday evening, La Porte City Police say witnesses saw the semi turning north on J Street at the intersection of 6th Street in La Porte and had a green light. A bicyclist, Glen Byrley, disregarded the signal and drove his bicycle into the path of the semi, according to the press release. The driver of the semi, 63-year-old Jeffrey Smith from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, reportedly could not stop in time to avoid a collision.

La Porte Man Named EMS of the Year

Members of the American Legion, Department of Indiana’s 3rd District has named the 2017 EMS of the Year.

Jeffrey Koon, of La Porte, is the recipient of this year’s award. According to 3rd District Commander Chuck Wotring, Koon was chosen for his outstanding service to his community in the medical field. Koon has worked as an EMT and paramedic for La Porte County EMS since 1993. He currently serves as captain there.
