Nurse Faces Level 5 Felony after Allegedly Trafficking Cell Phone into La Porte County Jail

A nurse employed by Advanced Correctional Healthcare has been arrested for the Level 5 Felony of trafficking with an inmate after she allegedly snuck a cell phone into La Porte County Jail with the intention of delivering it.

A press release issued by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office indicates that on Friday, March 16th, Jail administrative staff received information that an inmate within the jail was potentially in possession of a cellular telephone.

Upon receiving the information, an investigation was immediately launched and Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division of the La Porte County Sheriff’s office were called to assist. Continue reading

Accident Claims the Life of La Porte County Driver

 

Officers from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a crash that claimed the life of the driver Friday morning.

Police say a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 64-year-old George W. Johnson, Jr. was traveling east on County Road 400 North, east of County Road 50 West, when it left the south side of the roadway, struck small trees, flipped end-over-end, and landed upright approximately 200 feet from where the Jeep initially left the roadway. As a result, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was found lying next to the rear passenger side of the vehicle in a corn field.

Arrest Made in Double Fatality Crash

La Porte County officers have arrested a New Carlisle man following a double fatality crash on Friday, Oct. 6.

According to police, 40-year-old Tron Gorbonosenko drove his Ford Mustang head-on into a Honda Odyssey occupied by Don and Angie Kaczmarek. They died as a result of the collision, according to the report. Gorbonosenko was critically injured and was flown from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he remained for a week. Armed Robbery under Investigation

An armed robbery suspect is in custody after an Wednesday morning incident at a LaCrosse business.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, a black male entered the BP gas station in LaCrosse at 11:15 a.m. CT and demanded that the cashier open the register. Police say the suspect told the cashier that he had a weapon in his possession, but it was not displayed. The suspect fled the area south on Washington Street.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Department Looking for Theft Suspects

 

A significant number of vehicle thefts have been reported to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department and police are asking for help in identifying suspects allegedly involved in the thefts.

Investigators have approximately 50 open cases of theft from vehicles and another 50 are open with other agencies in La Porte County and surrounding departments. Several cases involve forced entry. The items reported stolen were left in plain sight. Electronics, money and firearms have been taken from vehicles.

Bicyclist Dies after Accident with Semi

 

A 53-year-old Hammond man died after he reportedly rode his bicycle into the path of an oncoming semi truck.

On Monday evening, La Porte City Police say witnesses saw the semi turning north on J Street at the intersection of 6th Street in La Porte and had a green light. A bicyclist, Glen Byrley, disregarded the signal and drove his bicycle into the path of the semi, according to the press release. The driver of the semi, 63-year-old Jeffrey Smith from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, reportedly could not stop in time to avoid a collision.

Indiana State Police to Investigate Shooting in Starke, La Porte Counties

 

Troopers from the Indiana State Police will be taking over the investigation of a shooting incident Thursday afternoon that started in North Judson and ended in La Porte County.

According to police, at about 4:05 p.m., a North Judson police officer recognized the driver of a vehicle who was wanted on a warrant. The officer conducted a traffic stop on State Road 10 by the CVS Pharmacy where the driver allegedly gave the officer false information. Police say the driver then fled from the scene.

Traffic Stop Leads to Pursuit and Arrest

A Chicago man is in custody after leading two La Porte County Sheriff’s Department deputies on a foot pursuit on Saturday.

Deputy Jon Samuelson conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation in the area of U.S. 20 east of State Road 39. Deputy Samuelson reportedly observed a large amount of credit cards partially concealed near the center console of the vehicle and he also smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

With area schools holding their proms and post-prom events within the next month, local law enforcement departments are stepping up DUI patrols throughout their communities. Police will saturate areas around each prom and post-prom site in an effort to cut down on potential alcohol and drug use, with a zero-tolerance policy toward the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages. In addition, those who provide alcohol to minors will be targeted and jailed.

La Porte County Police Bust Three For Dealing Cocaine, Heroin

Three people were arrested in La Porte County as the result of an investigation into the distribution of illegal narcotics within the city of La Porte. Police arrested the three suspects in a home in the 100 block of Jefferson Avenue. The suspects have been identified as 21-year-old Vandaze Buchanan of Chicago, 23-year-old Brittany Chapman of Chicago, and 26-year-old Brett Tanksley of La Porte.

Deputy Saves Two Family Pets From Burning La Porte County Home

A house fire in La Porte County late Wednesday morning startled the family, but no one was injured – not even their two pet rabbits that the family was unable to grab before fleeing the burning building.

Three La Porte County fire departments were dispatched to a house fire on Severe Road, east of County Road 100 West, shortly after 11 a.m. CT. A witness said the fire began in the home’s garage before spreading to the rest of the home.
