A fire destroyed an unoccupied mobile home near North Judson Saturday night. North Judson-Wayne Township firefighters say it happened just before 8:30 p.m. on Dawn Drive East. The trailer was three-quarters engulfed when they arrived.

The winners of the Light Up North Judson decoration contest will be announced during tonight’s Town Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Members are also expected to go over the 2019 salary ordinance and discuss the Rich Grove Township Fire Service Contract during tonight’s meeting.
Currently, other townships, such as Jackson and Wayne, are on fixed contracts with the North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department, where a flat fee of $10,000 is paid annually. On the other hand, Rich Grove Township has a pay-by-call contract where $660 is paid per call. Continue reading
Local Fire Departments Organize Temporary Coverage for Railroad Township
Three local fire departments are teaming up to provide temporary coverage to Railroad Township. The North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department announced on Facebook Thursday that Chief Joe Leszek, along with the chiefs of the LaCrosse and Medaryville-White Post Township volunteer fire departments, have agreed to cover Railroad Township on a non-contracted basis.

One Dead, Following House Fire near Medaryville
A house fire in rural Medaryville has claimed a life. The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Monday afternoon around 2:30, in the 9000 block of County Road 300 North. When Medaryville firefighters arrived, they reportedly found a deceased victim inside the home. The victim’s name has not yet been released. The Sheriff’s Office is helping with the investigation.

Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum Contributes to North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department Fundraiser
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum provided a donation to the North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department earlier this month.

No Injuries Reported in Monday’s Selected Furniture Fire
Area firefighters spent about four hours battling a fire at Selected Furniture in Knox Monday. Firefighters were called to the facility around 11:40 a.m. When they got there, they found a sawdust collector, a semi-trailer full of sawdust, and areas of the roof on fire, according to Knox-Center Township Assistant Fire Chief Ted Bombagetti.

Several area fire departments were called to a Knox manufacturing facility Monday. A fire was reported at Selected Furniture on Culver Road around 11:40 a.m., according to Starke County dispatchers. It reportedly began in one of the bins behind the plant, according to Knox Police Chief Harold Smith.
Washington Township Fire Results in Countywide Cooperative Effort
The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call about a structure fire in the 8,000 block of 50 South shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday.
Washington Township Fire Chief Dave Pearman reported that all seven of the county’s volunteer departments assisted with the incident. Knox-Center Township, Hamlet, Bass Lake and Koontz Lake departments helped on the scene while North Judson Wayne-Township and Rail-Road Township departments helped cover neighboring districts to ensure that no areas were without assistance.
Chief Pearman said that crews utilized positive pressure ventilation to blow smoke out of the house and reported it took approximately one hour to take control of the fire. Continue reading
