Two Sentenced in Marshall County Superior Court on Methamphetamine Charges

Two people were sentenced in Marshall County Superior Court 1 on Wednesday on methamphetamine related charges.

Jeremy Hill, 32, of Argos will spend ten years in the Indiana Department of Corrections after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. As per the plea agreement, Hill was ordered to undergo intensive drug rehabilitation through the purposeful incarceration program.

Marshall County Council Entertains Budget Considerations

 
 

The Marshall County Council heard several requests from department heads for consideration for the 2015 budget.

One item is the upgrade of the 911 system at the Marshall County Jail. Matt Pitney, the 911 Supervisor, said the current system is at least ten years old. He added that parts are no longer available for repairs and a service agreement will no longer be an option since the company servicing the equipment has been bought out and that company has decided to “end of life” that system.

Marshall County Council Holds Discussion on Proposed Highway Department Purchase

  
 

The Marshall County Council members discussed at length the purchase of an asphalt zipper at a cost of almost $160,000 to come out of the rainy day fund.

Marshall County Commissioner Jack Roose first spoke to the council members and explained his opposing vote for the asphalt zipper at the commissioner’s meeting last week. He feels that a purchase such as this should be tabled until a highway superintendent is hired and not by the interim superintendents.

Marshall County Council to Meet Today

  
 

The Marshall County Council will meet in regular session this morning.

The recorder and the clerk will be before the council to request personnel replacements and budget considerations will be taken from several departments.

Sheriff Tom Chamberlin will discuss an additional appropriation for $50,000 for prisoner care. The proposal was made at the council’s previous meeting where the members agreed to advertise for the money and a final decision will be made today.

Argos Man Sentenced on Meth Charge

An Argos man’s criminal case wrapped up in Marshall County Superior Court 1 after he was sentenced Thursday morning.

John Bobby, 49, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the State to a charge of possession of methamphetamine within a public housing complex. The terms of the agreement called for a ten year sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections on the charge which Judge Robert O. Bowen accepted. Bobby was sentenced to that term with no part of the sentence suspended and he will be able to participate in purposeful incarceration while imprisoned.

Home Permits Increase in Marshall County

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners received a positive report from Building Inspector Chuck DeWitt where inspections and permit applications are up.

“We had 105 inspections during April and that is actually more than what he had in the first three months. In May, we did 141. All of the contractors seem to be busy out there and doing well. If you look at the permit values, we were at $1.6 million during April and we are at $3.1 million or $3.2 million for May,” said DeWitt.

Marshall County Commissioners Approve Purchase of Asphalt Zipper

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners discussed the purchase of an asphalt zipper to take care of some of the roads that aren’t in the best shape in the northern part of the county.

Several county officials viewed a demonstration of the machine last week and thought it could fit the county’s needs for asphalt maintenance. The one the county has now is old and parts are not available to repair it.

Interim Highway Superintendent Jason Peters explained what the asphalt zipper accomplishes.

Teens Urged to Be Mindful of Curfew Laws

  
 

Summertime is right around the corner and that means longer days and shorter nights. No matter how short the nights may be, minors still have to obey curfew ordinances. State law mandates that all individuals between the ages of 15 through 17 cannot be in public unaccompanied Monday through Friday between the hours of 11 p.m and 5 a.m. On Saturdays and Sundays the curfew is set from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m. Children under the age of 15 are prohibited from being unaccompanied in public between the hours of 11 p.m until 5 a.m. any day of the week.

Some local towns have implemented their own policies expanding on the state’s curfew ordinances. Continue reading

Intoxicated Driver Arrested in Marshall County

 
 

A Fort Wayne man was recently arrested under the suspicion of driving his vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance.

James Krout, 40, was pulled over by Marshall County police on U.S. 30 near the intersection of Pioneer Drive and during the course of the traffic stop officers believed that Krout was under the influence. Officers also found that Krout’s Driver’s License was suspended in a lifetime forfeiture.

Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners will meet in regular session today where Bart Trester from USI will have an update on the 7th Road project and the Metronet project.

The Metronet project started a few weeks ago where conduit is being installed from Ireland Road in South Bend to Marshall County. That conduit will house broadband cables for high speed internet for businesses to increase productivity. The project is expected to be complete this year.

Tobacco Cessation Classes Offered at Fitness Forum Sports and Wellness

 
 

Smokers who would like some hands-on help to kick the habit can sign up for classes offered at Fitness Forum Sports and Wellness at LifePlex in Plymouth. American Lung Association Certified Freedom From Smoking Instructor Cindy Riester will lead the seven-week program. Classes start Monday, June 2. Riester will offer resources to quit, skills to manage weight and stress and group support during the eight classes. They meet Mondays through July 14 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. EDT and on Wednesday, June 18. That’s the scheduled quit day. Participants must register by May 30. The program is partially grant funded by the Marshall County local coordinating council and Governor’s Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana. The out-of-pocket cost for participants is $40 and includes a bonus two-month membership to Fitness Forum Sports and Wellness for those who successfully complete the course. Three Arrested on Drug Charges

 
 

Plymouth city officers went to a home in the 700 block of Mansfield Street in Plymouth to serve and execute the warrant in a theft investigation. Upon searching the residence, officers reportedly found stolen property along with substances believed to be methamphetamine and heroin. Police also allegedly found drug paraphernalia inside the home.  Continue reading

Metronet Project Underway in Marshall County, All Paperwork Signed

 All of the paperwork for the Metronet project has been signed. That was the information relayed to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning.

County Attorney Jim Clevenger said the City of South Bend approved the easement agreement that was prepared for the placement of conduit on the Michigan Road right-of-way. The intergovernmental agreement with the Marshall County Council was approved last week and the Memorandum of Understanding with St. Joseph County was signed at the end of April. Clevenger said all is good to continue with the construction plus the services once that construction is complete.

Teenage Driver Injured in Single Vehicle Crash

 

 
 

A 16-year-old from Plymouth was treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Marshall County after he rolled his sport-utility vehicle Monday morning. Michael Slitter was northbound on Pine Road north of 5th Road and lost control of his 2003 Chevrolet Blazer, according to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. The SUV landed on its top. Slitter told the officer he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.
