Marshall County Council Approves Sheriff’s Additional Appropriation Advertisement Request

 
 

The Marshall County Council entertained a request from Sheriff Tom Chamberlin to advertise for an additional appropriation for inmate health care.

In October 2013, the county approved Chamberlin to enter into a contract with Quality Correctional Care and while Chamberlin said the services they have provided are excellent, more money needs to be appropriated for their services.

Marshall County Council to Meet Today

 

The Marshall Council Council will meet in regular session this morning at 9 a.m. ET.

Wes Burden with the Marshall County Health Department will request a personnel replacement and Sheriff Tom Chamberlin will discuss prisoner care. Additional appropriations for the auditor’s office, court services, WIC and EMA grants will be considered.

IU Health Adds Nurse Practitioners

 
 

IU Health LaPorte Physicians recently added two new nurse practitioners.

Maureen Panares and Alissa Whittaker are seeing patients in several northern Indiana communities. Nurse practitioners have extensive training and work under the direction of a physician. Maureen Panares, DNP, is an Advanced Practice Nurse with a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Family and Community Health from Rush University. She sees patients at the Sagamore location in LaPorte.

Whittaker recently received a Master of Science in nursing from Indiana University South Bend. She sees patients in Plymouth at Lifeplex and in Walkerton.

 

Plymouth Woman Sentenced to 10 years on Meth Charge

A Plymouth woman was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the State to charge of Manufacturing Methamphetamine.

Crystal Bloomfield, 38, admitted in Marshall County Superior Court 1 that she assisted Travis Howell in the manufacturing methamphetamine at his residence on Kenilworth Road near Argos.

Four years of Bloomfield’s sentence was suspended. Bloomfield will be able to participate in intensive drug rehabilitation through the purposeful incarceration program.

Plymouth Fire Department Requests Use of County Property for Training Facility

Training-TowerThe Plymouth Fire Department is looking for a piece of property to construct a live training facility. Fire Chief Rod Miller approached the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning to request the use of some land at the Marshall County Jail site.

“The purpose of this is to obtain property for this training facility,” explained Miller. “The use of this property would be a multi-agency use for the county departments including police and fire. It would definitely be an opportunity for every department in the county to take advantage of something like this. The closest one that we have now is in Warsaw.”

Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners will meet in regular session today in the commissioners meeting room on the second floor in the Marshall County Building.

Bart Trester from USI is expected to discuss the 7th Road project; Director of Court Services, Ward Byers, will talk about the Software Maintenance Project and the commissioners will appoint members to the Argos Plan Commission.

Farmer Assists Trooper in Arrest

A farmer helped an Indiana State Police trooper make an arrest last week.

A trooper spotted an erratic driver in Kosciusko County and a chase ensued. The suspect was able to get away but the trooper later saw the suspect’s vehicle parked in a driveway at 4985 N. 920 W. in Etna Green. The officer exited his car and found the suspect running through a farm field. The trooper returned to his car and paralleled the man on 400 North as the man began to run faster through the field.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Multiple Thefts

 
 

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two thefts reported Tuesday evening by residents in the 16,000 block of 12th road. Dan Miller told deputies two bicycles were taken from his home. Joseph McKee said items were taken from his unlocked vehicle.

A Culver man got an unpleasant surprise Wednesday night when he returned to his home after being away for the winter. He told deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department that someone broke into his pole barn in the 16,000 block of 20th Road and stole several tools and other items. He’s not sure when the crime occurred.

Plymouth Man Arrested on Drug Charges Following Traffic Stop

A Plymouth man faces felony drug charges following a traffic stop early Saturday morning. An officer from the Marshall County Police Department stopped a car driven by David Rhoades, 25, at the on Oakhill near the intersection of Nutmeg Road around 2 a.m. County Police K9 Arras indicated the presence of drugs in the vehicle, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department. Officers searched the vehicle and reportedly found a substance believed to be heroin, needles and other paraphernalia. Rhoades refused a certified drug test and was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a syringe, operating a vehicle while intoxicated controlled substance and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.

The President of the Indiana Chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association is taking the time to walk along Lincoln Highway to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association and the Lincoln Highway Association.

Jeff Blair, a Goshen, Indiana native, will be walking through Hamlet, Plymouth and Etna Green this week. On Tuesday, April 29, Blair will enter Hamlet on his walk along the Lincoln Highway and he will stop by the Marshall County Museum on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. ET. Then on Wednesday, he will continue on his route from Plymouth to Etna Green.

Marshall County Museum Director Looking for New Employee

  
 

The Marshall County Commissioners approved a request from Museum Director Linda Rippy.

Rippy asked the commissioners for permission to advertise for a new employee to replace Judy McCollough who will be retiring on June 6.

McCollough has worked at the museum for 19 years and held the most recent position of Historical Archive Manager. Her replacement would be a full time hire.

Indiana Bicentennial Workshop Planned at Marshall County Museum

Indiana BicentennialA workshop will be held Monday, April 28 in order to assist in planning Indiana’s bicentennial celebration. The Indiana Historical Society will host the workshop at the Marshall County Museum at 123 N. Michigan Street in Plymouth.

Indiana turns 200 years old on Dec. 11, 2016, but work is being done now to plan the celebration. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the state’s identity and reflect on how the state has changed. It’s also a change to think creatively and a once-in-a lifetime chance to capture the attention of the public of the importance of Indiana history.

The workshop will include the Marshall County Museum staff and local organizations. It will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET and you are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided. If you plan to attend, call the Marshall County Museum at (574) 936-2306.

Plymouth High School Named Silver Medalist High School

 
 

Plymouth High School has made the U.S. News and World Report as one of the top schools in Indiana.

The high school is ranked as a Silver Medalist High School. The school came in 12th place.

The U.S. News and World Report used a three-step process to determine the best high schools. The first steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. The third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

Drug Take Back Event This Saturday in Marshall County

 The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Bremen Police Department are participating in the DEA Drug Take Back program on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET.

You can take your expired, unwanted or unused medicines for disposal to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at 1400 Pioneer Drive in Plymouth or to the CVS Pharmacy at 1150 W. Plymouth Street in Bremen.

Marshall County Commissioners Sign Metronet Paperwork

 The Marshall County Commissioners signed several documents Monday morning to get the Metronet project closer to the beginning phase.

The interlocal agreement with Marshall County and the City of Plymouth was signed by the commissioners which will go on to the county council to be signed. County Attorney Jim Clevenger explained that a local board will need to be formed to oversee operations. A commissioner, city council member, county council member, and a representative from the private sector will need to be appointed to this board.

Knox Man Plans to Present Dog Park Plans to Park Board

dog picA Knox man is on a mission to establish an off-the-leash park in the city limits for dogs and their owners. Chuck Richardson has collected 100 or so signatures in support. “People have dogs, and they have to work. These dogs are left in apartments or houses all day long. When people come home, they need a place to take their dogs for exercise, where dogs can exercise and play and get acquainted with other dogs, and people can get acquainted with other people,” Richardson said.

Plymouth has a dog park, and Richardson has spoken extensively with officials there. He says such facilities offer several “Residents can gather and socialize, allow owners to observe their dog with other dogs, allow dogs a space to play and companionship with other dogs, promote responsible pet ownership, give dogs a place to exercise thus reducing barking and other problem behavior, and provide seniors and disabled owners an accessible place to exercise and have companionship.” Continue reading
