Authorities in Marshall County believe speed and possibly alcohol were factors in a Saturday afternoon wreck that sent the driver and a front seat passenger to South Bend Memorial Hospital via helicopter. A 1995 Mercury driven by Nicholas Walker, 22, of Plymouth was northbound on Tulip Road from 9C road in Plymouth, lost control and hit a tree, according to a crash report from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Walker was pinned in the car but conscious when sheriff’s deputies arrived. A passenger, Matthew Gaines, was also in the vehicle and was in and out of consciousness, according to authorities. Both had to be cut from the wreckage. A young girl in the back seat was not hurt. A formal criminal case is being prepared and will be sent to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today
The Marshall County Commissioners have a meeting this morning in the Commissioner’s Room in the Marshall County Building.
Museum Director Linda Rippy will have a quarterly report and a personnel replacement notification, and Clay Kelley from CSU, Inc. will discuss the Metronet project with the commissioners.
Meth Offender Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison
A Plymouth man was sentenced to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and theft.
Thomas Howell, 50, was arrested in March after police arrived at the Red Rock Inn in Plymouth looking for him. The owner of Quality Setters, Inc. called to report that Howell was stripping wires from buildings. When they arrived at the room at the motel, officers could see people inside the room through a curtain even though they weren’t answering the door. After the occupants reportedly moved items around in the room, the door was opened and officers asked for Howell.
Plymouth Man Sentenced to 28 Years in DOC
A Plymouth man known to be a popular methamphetamine cook and for getting more and more people addicted to the drug over the past several years will be spending a lot of time behind bars after pleading guilty to several serious charges in a plea agreement with the State.
Marshall County Superior Court Judge Robert O. Bowen sentenced Otis Young to a total of 28 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections in a hearing Thursday afternoon.
Metronet Bids Approved by Marshall County Commissioners and Plymouth Redevelopment Commission
The Marshall County Commissioners approved a bid for the county’s portion of the Metronet project and the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission approved a bid for the city’s portion of the project.
The commissioners approved a bid from CSU, Inc. for Alternate A at a cost of$598,221.99. The county’s portion of the project includes general work for the infrastructure and conduit.
The city selected the base bid and alternates A, B, C, and D with Michiana Contracting.
Plymouth Airport Board Moving Forward to Obtain Weather Station
The Plymouth Aviation Board will be moving forward in obtaining a weather station.
Dave Lattimer told the Marshall County Council on Monday morning that it’s highly probable that the green light will be given for a weather station after several other improvements are made.
Lattimer explained that the runways need to be extended and widened and two taxiways from the ramp to the runways need to intersect at a “T” instead of at a 45 degree angle. The staff will also need to extend the taxiways. Insurance will also need to be adjusted. All of those improvements need to be done before the FAA will approve the Plymouth Airport for a weather station.
Marshall County Patrolmen Receive Sergeant Stripes
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department has two new patrol sergeants. Patrolmen Phil Beam and Nick Laffoon were selected through a numerical scoring system by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Merit Board. Beam is a 27-year veteran of the department and lives in the Argos area. Laffoon lives near Plymouth and has been with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department for nine years.
Marshall County Remains Under Travel Advisory, EMA Gets Grant Request Approval
Marshall County remains under a travel advisory as water has ponded in roadways.
Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery told WKVI that water is standing on Olive Road between 4th and 4B Road and the advisory will remain until that area and other clear up.
The Marshall County Commissioners approved Avery’s grant request Monday morning.
John Glenn Student Named Lilly Endowment Community Scholar
A John Glenn High School senior will receive a full tuition scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and an additional $900 annual stipend to help with books and other school equipment. Cole Jacobson of Plymouth is the Marshall County Community Foundation’s 2014 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Jacobson has received numerous state and national academic awards and has demonstrated leadership through his involvement with National Honor Society and student council. He also attended Hoosier Boys State, the Hugh O’Brien Leadership Seminar and Purdue Entrepreneur Academy. Jacobson also volunteers with several local non profit organizations, teaches and mentors local youth and visits with senior citizens at a local nursing home. Continue reading

Bids for Metronet Project Opened Monday
Bids were opened for the Metronet project in Marshall County.
The Plymouth Redevelopment Commission opened five bids for the work, plus alternates for work to be done involving piping down Pine Road east and west and on State Road 17, plus lateral installation to buildings and to the county buildings.
The Marshall County Commissioners opened seven bid packets for general work for the infrastructure and conduit.
Single-Vehicle Crash in Plymouth Sends South Bend Woman to Hospital
A South Bend woman who lost control of her vehicle while merging onto U.S. 31 northbound from U.S. 30 westbound late Friday morning was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. Sarah K. Thrasher, 22, hit a light post before her vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its roof, according to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. She sustained a head injury and complained of pain.

Single-Vehicle Fatality Claims Plymouth Woman’s Life
A single-vehicle crash Monday evening near Grovertown claimed a Plymouth woman’s life. Cathryn Ellison, 24, of Plymouth, was westbound on 300 North just west of 1100 East, lost control of her vehicle and was ejected, according to information provided this morning by the Starke County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch. Ellison was trapped underneath it. Starke County Chief Deputy Coroner Doug O’Donnell pronounced her dead at the scene. Her official cause of death is listed as traumatic asphyxiation. Coroner Kris Rannells tells WKVI news that means the weight of the vehicle on top of her would not allow her to breathe. The Hamlet Police Department, Koontz Lake, Hamlet and Washington Township Fire Departments and the Indiana State Police assisted the Starke County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. The Indiana State Police will be reconstructing the crash.
Federal Judge Renders Decision in Department of Justice Challenge
A federal judge ruled in favor of the City of Plymouth in a U.S. Military Reserve Officer’s lawsuit filed in 2012.
According to Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi, Robert D. DeLee who was serving the country in the Air Force Reserves was seeking city longevity pay under the federal Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Surrisi explained that longevity pay is additional compensation that the city provides to qualified employees as an incentive to remain in service to the city.
Plymouth High School Music Program Receives National Award
The Plymouth High School Music Department has been chosen as one of 96 schools in the country to receive the “Support Music Merit Award”.
The NAMM Foundation awards school music education programs with the “Best Communities for Music Education” (BCME) and individual schools the “Support Music Merit Award”. The BCME program recognizes the efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders working to assure that music education is part of the core curriculum. Overall, 376 districts were designated as “Best Communities for Music Education” and 96 individual schools were “Support Music Merit Award” winners.
Two Injured in Marshall County Accident
Two people were injured in a three vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon in Marshall County.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene in front of Ev and Jayne’s Irish Inn on Michigan Road north of 7B Road in Plymouth at 12:08 p.m. ET. A semi driven by Lavern Sampler of Michigan was traveling south behind a vehicle driven by Summer Scott of Syracuse, Indiana . The semi driver told police that he reportedly did not know the vehicle was turning into the business. The semi rear-ended Scott’s vehicle which was pushed into the path of an SUV driven by Cheryl Kuhn of Plymouth. Kuhn was traveling north on Michigan Road.
St. Joe Medical Center in Plymouth Announces Expansion
The St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has announced a future expansion at its Plymouth campus featuring a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department. The hospital is expected to break ground for the expansion project at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, beginning the work of constructing the new 12,000 square-foot Emergency Department located adjacent to the Plymouth hospital’s current Emergency Department.
Marshall County Police Bust Underage Drinking Party
Officers from the Marshall County Police Department and Indiana State Police arrested seven adults after reportedly breaking up an underage drinking party early Sunday morning. They got a tip about the party taking place at a residence in the 13-thousand block of 2A Road in Plymouth, according to a department news release and arrived just before 2 a.m. Officers found seven underage adults and three juveniles drinking at the residence, according to the police report, which also notes there was evidence of marijuana use inside the residence. The seven underage adults were all arrested on a misdemeanor charge of illegal consumption of alcohol. They are: Zachary Hostetler, 18 of Plymouth; Rex Budzielek, 18, of Lakeville; Howard Borton, 18, of Lakeville; Tyler Thompson, 19, of Lakeville; Jordan Hoober, 18, of Plymouth; Gage Chapman, 19, of Mishawaka; and Devin Johnson, 19, of Plymouth. Authorities called the parents of the three juveniles involved and asked them to pick up their children. Police reports were forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office and Marshall County Probation Department for further juvenile proceedings.
