The Plymouth police department is looking to get a much needed facelift.
Chief of Police David Bacon appeared before the Board of Works and Safety Monday night to explain some issues with the building. He said that there are some exterior problems as well as painting that needs done on the interior. New wallpaper is also needed as the current wallpaper is starting to look bad in some spots.
Labor Day weekend is almost here and that means it’s time for the 48th annual Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
Festivities get underway Friday with the Little Miss and Mister Blueberry Pageant, the fast pitch competitions and the headline concert by country duo Montgomery Gentry and Frankie Ballard.
Gov. Mike Pence, U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski and other dignitaries will be on hand for tomorrow’s ribbon cutting and dedication of the new U.S. 31 between Plymouth and South Bend. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. EDT on State Road 4 at the new U.S. 31 interchange. The road will be closed in that area from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will now be securing the Marshall County building.
Commissioner Deb Griewank explained that the maintenance department had been securing the building at the end of the day, but felt the sheriff’s department’s court security could take over that responsibility. She asked Sheriff Tom Chamberlin if a deputy could secure the building and he would agree to that as long as it is in writing.
The Plymouth City Council will meet tonight to discuss several items on a full agenda.
Two public hearings will be held for tax abatement requests from AK Industries, Inc. and for Composite Technology Assemblies, LLC. Reports will be given by the council members, Mayor Mark Senter and City Attorney Sean Surrisi on previous business and on new business.
A man was arrested in Marshall County Thursday night after leaving the scene of an accident.
Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at U.S. 30 and King Road where a two-vehicle accident occurred. The driver of the car who reportedly caused the accident fled the scene.
Officers found the suspect’s vehicle traveling on the new U.S. 31 highway and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect didn’t not stop and a pursuit began. The vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of U.S. 6 and the driver, John Vogt, was arrested without incident.
A representative from U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s office will be in Starke, Pulaski and Marshall Counties next week to help local constituents who need to access federal government services. Continue reading →

Expect traffic delays today as traffic shifts to the new U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth.
INDOT crews will begin changing traffic to the new alignment of U.S. 31 after 9 a.m. ET. Traffic may be slowed or stopped as crews move barricades, barrels and other traffic control devices. To avoid delays, avoid access points for the new U.S. 31 until after 1 p.m. ET today.
Three interchanges will open today. Those interchanges are located at Kern Road in South Bend, State Road 4 in Lakeville and U.S. 6 in LaPaz. A fourth interchange will open once construction at 7th Road near Plymouth is finished later this year.
The Metronet project is expected to finish ahead of schedule.
The Marshall County Commissioners noted that the installation of conduit has been going smoothly for the most part and the installation should be complete in mid-September. The Metronet officials will then install the dark fiber and companies should be able to connect to high-speed internet soon after the construction.
Roland Houin with Fourway Computer Products at 12700 4A Road told the commissioners that he’s ready to tap into the service to run to his facility as soon as possible. He plans to lay down conduit and to be prepared once the fibers are lit. He said he wants to experiment running the conduit and fibers to a communication tower and to homes in that area which is by the Tri-Way Theatre and the state highway garage.

The new stretch of U.S. 31 will open Thursday, Aug. 21st. The new road is 20 miles of divided, four-lane highway between the U.S. 20 bypass in South Bend and U.S. 30 near Plymouth. Restrictions will remain on the north end of the project near South Bend and the south end near Plymouth as construction continues through the remainder of this year. Continue reading →
The Marshall County Commissioners will meet today at 9:30 a.m. ET.
The commissioners are expected to discuss a resolution that will pertain to the refunding of 2006 jail bonds.
Laura Mann from the Heminger House will be before the commissioners to request funding to help keep the domestic abuse shelter open. She told the county council last week that the shelter has served 952 since 2008 and that the shelter is critical in keeping abuse victims in a familiar area instead up completely uprooting them to a new environment. Mann indicated that they’ve lost $65,000 in grant funding due to state and federal cuts.
A seven-month-long investigation into reports of drug activity ended with yesterday’s arrests of a Plymouth couple. State police got a tip back in February from the Marshall County Probation Department that methamphetamine was possibly being manufactured and used at 901 W. Harrison St. in Plymouth. The council members will entertain an additional appropriation request for the 7th Road construction project in the amount of $252,000 from the cumulative bridge fund. The council members will also discuss a salary amendment for a WIC employee.
Representatives from the Plymouth Tennis Club and City of Plymouth are pausing in their plan to develop new tennis courts at Centennial Park. They issued a joint statement saying “this pause will allow the organizations to better address remaining questions before moving forward.” Continue reading →
The Marshall County Commissioners received an update on two ongoing construction projects.
Bart Trester, project supervisor for the 7th Road project, said the project is on schedule to finish this year.
“The contractors have completed the removal of the unsuitable soils and are backfilling with the borrowed material along the project limits. With that done, the contractors have been able to upgrade the main line and cut ditches along the project limits. They have completed the installation of the box culvert at Zimmer Ditch and a temporary lane has been constructed. Traffic will be switched over and this will allow the contractor to begin construction on the roundabout on Michigan Road. Pile driving issues on the Seltenright Ditch are on hold as we’re waiting for the contractor to return to the project. In talking with the designer, we should be able to lighten driving requirements so we don’t have to drive them so deep,” explained Trester.
Indiana students overall showed improvement on their ISTEP scores in both math and language arts. Scores released yesterday by the Indiana Department of Education indicate 80.7 percent of students passed English, compared to 79.5 percent in 2013.
