Culver School Board to Consider Metal Detector Policy, 2019 Budget Tonight

The Culver School Board is expected to finalize a policy on the use of metal detectors tonight. The school corporation received three handheld metal detectors, as part of the state’s program to provide them free of charge to Indiana’s schools. The proposed policy stipulates that the devices may only be used by school administrators in cases where there is reasonable suspicion, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman.

West Central School Board Finalizes Metal Detector Policy

New metal detectors have arrived at the West Central School Corporation. Last week, the school board finalized a policy update when it comes to how they’ll be used, according to Superintendent Don Street. “I think it’s important to note that the handheld metal detectors are designed for individual searches based on reasonable suspicion,” he says.

Another Round of Policy Updates Presented to Knox School Board

Groups using Knox school facilities would officially be banned from holding events with alcohol or betting, under a policy proposal presented to the school board last month. Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart said that would mean that outside organizations wouldn’t be allowed to hold bingo events at school facilities, but raffles held by school groups could continue, since they wouldn’t fall under this policy. It’s one of several policy updates recommended by policy consultant NEOLA.

Oregon-Davis School Board Accepts Donation for FFA and National Honor Society

A couple student organizations at Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School got a financial boost this week. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says the school board accepted a donation from the Oregon-Davis Young Farmers organization. “That donation was $700 to the Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School FFA and another $700 to the Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School National Honor Society,” Harman says.

State Law Changes Prompt Policy Adjustments at Eastern Pulaski Schools

Policies at the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation are getting some adjustments, due to recent changes in state law. The corporation’s medication policy saw the biggest update. School personnel will now be allowed to administer “low THC hemp extract” to students, as long as they have a prescription and written permission from a parent or guardian, and the product meets various state and federal requirements.
