Oregon-Davis Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says the school corporation has been working on updating its crisis plan. “We’re looking at all different types of scenarios with crisis, whether that be a fire drill or tornado drill, or obviously intruder drill,” he explains. “But we’re also looking at death of a family member, death of a staff member, suicide.”
LaPorte County Police are investigating the apparent shootings of two horses and possibly a cow last week. A sheriff’s deputy was called to the 7300 block of East Emery Road in Hudson Lake, after a resident noticed that two horses on his property appeared to have sustained bullet wounds, one in its front right leg, the other in its front left leg.
One man is dead after an incident at a residence in Medaryville on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers arrived at a home in the 200 block of S. Waldron in Medaryville at 12:41 p.m. after receiving a report about a stabbing and shooting there. Pulaski County Coroner John Behny says the cause and manner of death are under investigation at this time pending an autopsy and toxicology results.

The North Judson man shot by police responding to a call at his residence is in stable condition at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. That’s where 29-year-old Richard Joseph Benwell was airlifted early Tuesday afternoon with what was described as a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin says sheriff’s deputies and North Judson Police were notified by dispatchers of a man hitting his fiancée’s car with a sledgehammer in the 5000 block of 800 South. That’s southwest of North Judson.
The Plymouth man shot by police in December is now facing a few felony charges.
34-year-old Lane Dodson was shot by police in the parking lot of the K-Mart in Plymouth on December 29th. That’s after a state trooper began questioning him about an earlier battery call they suspected he was involved with.

Officers from the LaPorte City Police Department are looking for more information in a shooting early this morning at Ellian’s Pub/Avenue Bar in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue.
Witnesses told police that an African American man confronted another African American man which escalated into gunfire. The victim was shot once and the suspect fled the establishment in an unknown vehicle.
Authorities in LaPorte County are investigating a Sunday afternoon shooting that claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy. It happened inside a mobile home at Terrace Acres on U.S. 20, according to “The Times of Northwest Indiana.” Several people have been questioned, according to the newspaper, but no arrests have been made. One of the youngster’s female relatives reportedly told the newspaper the shooting was “a really bad, tragic accident.”
Authorities in Fulton County say the armed man shot by a Kewanna homeowner when he broke into a Toner Street residence early Monday will face criminal charges when he’s released from the hospital. Michael Righter, 41, was reportedly there to shoot his soon-to-be ex-wife, Rebecca. Instead, her boyfriend, Camron Vawter, shot Righter before he could get to the bedroom where she was sleeping. Righter remains in critical condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital. Authorities say this is the latest in a series of incidents involving Righter and his soon-to-be-ex-wife.

A man police say was armed when he broke into a Kewanna home early this morning is in critical condition at Memorial Hospital in South Bend after being shot by the homeowner. The victim is identified as 41-year-old Michael Righter of Kewanna. Occupants of the home in the 300 block of Toner Street reportedly heard glass breaking just after midnight. The male homeowner got his gun, went to investigate, shot and disarmed the man and called the police, according to authorities. A woman inside the house told the police she and Righter are going through a divorce. The incident remains under investigation.
