A Knox woman’s mother experienced one of the most important events in United States history on this date in 1941. Teresa Stoner, mother of Karen Dunn, was living with her family in Honolulu, Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.
Indiana Republican Senator Phil Boots of Crawfordsville is going to try to end Indiana’s ban on Sunday carryout alcohol sales in the upcoming legislative session.
The Senator is arguing that Sunday alcohol sales would help Indiana’s economy and any chance to increase revenue in Indiana should be considered. However, one study shows that changes in alcohol regulations between 1980 and 2007 found there was little fiscal impact.
We asked Paula McMahon, owner of Knox Liquors, whether or not she is in favor of alcohol sales on Sunday:
“I am against it and so is the Indiana Liquor Association,” replied McMahon. “I know the legislators are wanting it because of revenue loss. I really don’t think the revenue loss will gain anything over what it is because the people are going where they’re going on Sundays and they’re going to continue to do it. It’s probably cheaper where they’re going than what it would be in the state of Indiana. I think this will cause more problems than good. I don’t think it’s going to do anything for sales and I know if they pass it, this store will not be open on Sundays.”
The proposal in the past has faced opposition from many liquor store owners, in part because they believe any business gained would be canceled out by additional costs for being open another day.

The Starke United Radio Auction was held Friday at the CenturyLink Warehouse in downtown Knox. After a five hour auction conducted by Ben Osinski, Starke United netted over $6,000 for it’s fall campaign.
Wendy Medborn, Executive Director of Love Inc. spoke with WKVI’s Ted Hayes this week and said the organization is close to entering into the second phase of the mission.
“This phase is where we do long-term counseling,” explained Medborn. “Whether it’s finances, a job, career, cooking or marriage, it’s something that we’re going to try and get started in the community. Other Love Inc. organizations do that. It takes a lot of volunteers and it takes a lot of people needing that specific need and it is usually a year-long process. We’re doing small, little things that maybe take a week, or a couple weeks, or a month trying to learn but that is part of phase two that we’re working on.”
At the top of the organization’s agenda is leading people to Christ.
“When we talk with our clients, we pray with them right on the phone,” said Medborn. “We tell them, ‘God loves you and He sees you and He’s going to see you through this situation’. We continue to guide them in that. If they don’t belong to a church, we ask them if a pastor come out and talk to them and pray with them. The church is to support you, encourage you and help you get on your feet. We just walk with them day by day.”

The annual Starke United Auction will be held today at the CenturyLink warehouse. The auction will be broadcast on both WKVI AM and FM and kicks off at 10:00 a.m. CT. WKVI’s Tom Berg and Ted Hayes are the hosts. This year we will be assisted by auctioneer, Ben Osinski, who will describe the items and give you bidding rules.
A verdict has been declared in the Gerald Broude trial in Starke Circuit Court.
A jury of seven men and five women deliberated for 30 minutes and found Broude guilty on all four counts of child molestation. Broude’s bond was revoked and Broude was ordered to be held without bond until his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. CT in Starke Circuit Court.

The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling by Starke County Magistrate, Jeanene Calabrese, concerning a search warrant executed at the residence of Donnie Salyer of Knox.
The Love Inc. organization is fulfilling many needs of people experiencing crisis situations in Starke County. The Executive Director of Love Inc. is Wendy Medborn. She’s been “on the job” since August and is already realizing what a big job it is.

Orientation for newly elected officials in Starke County will be held Tuesday, December 21st, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. A tentative agenda will be emailed to all existing department heads who are invited to attend.
New Council members are David Pearman, Mitchell Semans, Anthony Radkiewicz, and Marvin McLaughlin. They will be going into office after January 1st. Also invited to attend is newly elected Prosecutor, Nicholas Bourff.
The trial of Gerald Broude is scheduled to continue today in Starke Circuit Court. Broude is charged with four counts of molestation. The alleged acts occurred in 2008.
The Starke County Election Board has scheduled a post election meeting for Friday, December 10th, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the 2nd floor meeting room in the Starke County Courthouse.
The Board, consisting of President Pat Mitchell, Vice President Jim Henriott and Clerk Evelyn Skronski, will review the 2010 election, make plans for the 2011 City Election and approve election workers. The public is invited to attend the meeting.
