Starke County Road 50 S. from State Road 39 to the Knox City Limits will be upgraded to hot mix asphalt beginning Monday, May 11. Officials from the Starke County Highway Department say it is a major route for the Knox Industrial Park and will benefit both employers and employees.

Donations for school safety training and an elementary school field trip were formally accepted by the Knox School Board last week. The school corporation received $834 from the Starke County Community Foundation’s Go for School Safety Fund. That helped with the cost of last month’s active shooter tabletop exercise for Starke County school officials and first responders. The school board also accepted a donation from the Bennett family, to help pay for the third grade field trip to Fair Oaks Farms.
After two rounds of bidding, the Hamlet Town Council has decided not to pursue grant funding for Railroad Street improvements at this time. Council members voted Wednesday to reject all three paving bids and table a Community Crossings application until the January call for projects.
Hamlet’s Starke Street sidewalk extension is almost complete. The sidewalk is being installed along the west side of Starke Street from Plymouth Street north to the gas station. Engineer Lee Nagai told the town council Wednesday that Covenant Concrete had just one more section of concrete to pour.
Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project continues. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts says the road remains closed, as paving contractor Walsh & Kelly rebuilds it from Plymouth Street north to U.S. 30. Pitts says she doesn’t have a specific timeline for when the work will be done.
U.S. 35 in Knox will get a new road surface in an INDOT project set to begin at the end of July.
Officials with the Town of Hamlet are waiting patiently for the Community Crossings project to begin.
