Multiple ordinances were up for consideration during Monday night’s Winamac Town Council meeting.

One of the ordinances was permitting adjustment to be made to water and sewer bills due to undetected water leaks. Another ordinance establishes policies and procedures for declaring bad credit uncollectable and the last ordinance approved credit adjustments to be made due to clerical or read errors. Winamac Town Council Approves Fire Chief’s New Hires

There will be a handful of new faces on the Winamac Volunteer Fire Department, following a decision made by council members Monday night.

Fire Chief Bill Weaver came before the board to discuss a recent application process that resulted in four individuals being selected to join the department.

The chosen applicants are Cody Fox, Brandon Degroot, Frances Check and Cody Spencer. Chief Weaver said all of the applicants were very energetic during their interviews and they seemed like they’d all be good fits for the department. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council will Consider Multiple Ordinances at Tonight’s Meeting

Multiple ordinances will come before Winamac Town Council members when they meet tonight at 6 p.m. ET.

Members will consider an ordinance permitting adjustments to the water and sewer bills due to undetected water leaks, one that would establish a policy and procedure for declaring bad debt uncollectable and another ordinance approving credit adjustments due to clerical or read errors.

Pulaski County Council Takes Steps to Make Donation Funds Available for EMS Department’s Use

After a couple left almost $30,000 to the Pulaski County EMS Department in their will, county officials are now taking steps to allow that money to be used. EMS Director Bryan Corn asked the county council this month to formally incorporate that money into his budget. “Just a little over a month ago, I believe, we received a check,” he explained. “It was a donation from the estate of a Henry and Alice Mooi. That total comes out to $29,901.71. That is strictly to be used for the EMS Department only, and that is strictly to be used for equipment for the EMS Department.”

Winamac Officials Discuss Issue with Unpaid Utility Bills at Rented Property

Winamac officials plan to develop an ordinance that will address an ongoing issue with unpaid utility bills at rented properties.

During Monday’s Town Council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger explained that, typically, the unpaid bills would just be sent to the former tenants’ new residence. However, she said they don’t always leave a forwarding address. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Establishes Fund for Mooi Family’s Police Department Donation

The Winamac Town Council was tasked with creating a fund for the generous posthumous donation from Hank and Alice Mooi when members met Monday night.

Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger reminded the council that the police department received approximately $29,900 from the Mooi Trust and explained that since it was a bequest from a trust, a new fund has to be created.

Berger noted that one of the stipulations is that the money can only be spent on equipment.

School Custodian Repairs Winamac Town Park Toilet, Amid Dispute Between School, Park Board

A broken toilet that’s been a point of contention between the Winamac Park Board and the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation has been repaired, thanks to a school custodian. That’s what Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo told the park board last Thursday. “I received a phone call last night, in the evening, from Steve Lawson, who is a maintenance person at the school,” DeLorenzo said. “He, on his own time, went and repaired the toilet in the bathrooms up at the ball diamonds that the school was unwilling to address, and he decided that he would take care of that on his own.”

Winamac Town Council to Consider Budget Adoption Tonight

The 2019 Budget, including tax rates and appropriations for next year, will be up for adoption at tonight’s Winamac Town Council meeting.

According to the information available through the Indiana Gateway for Governmental Units, the Town of Winamac submitted a budget estimate of $1,625,712. The General Fund makes up a majority of that, containing $1,088,702. Continue reading

Winamac Park Board President Reports ‘Disconnection’ Between Parks Department and School Corporation

A “disconnection” between the Park Board and the school corporation was brought to the attention of the Winamac Town Council last week.

Park Board President Courtney Poor came before the council last Monday to discuss a number of matters related to the park. One item he brought up was a perceived lack of labor sharing cooperation from school officials to assist with projects, specifically ones related to the concession stand area and the ball diamonds. Winamac Park Board President Consults with Town Council About Recent Work Session

Winamac Park Board President Courtney Poor came before the town council during their most recent meeting to inform them about a work session held by the Park Board.

Poor said the session was attended by several representatives of the various entities that utilize the parks’ facilities. He said one of the goals of the Park Board is to encourage those individuals who utilize the park to participate in focused clean-up days. Winamac Town Council Passes New Procurement Card Resolution

Winamac Town Council members considered a resolution Monday night that would take the place of one that was established a few years ago.

As previously reported, Winamac Town Council members passed a resolution back in 2016 that would authorize the use of procurement cards from the BMO Harris Bank out of Illinois.

At the time, they couldn’t acquire the cards because the Town didn’t have a recent audit. After one was completed, Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger reminded the council about the resolution. Continue reading

Winamac Police Officer Commended, Town Council Weighs in on Decal Decision

A Winamac Police Officer was commended during Monday night’s town council meeting.

During Town Marshal Mark Hoffman’s report, he noted that since school is back in session, they’ve increased patrols around there, specifically when students are getting on and off the busses. Councilwoman Judy Heater commented on the performance of Officer Brian Gaillard. Continue reading
