The response to COVID-19 will mean some adjustments for the City of Knox. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last week that preliminary reports suggest a decrease in funding for cities, towns, and counties. “The revenue stream is going to be shorted with this, and if you look at it, our [County Economic Development Income Tax] funds, people get laid off, unemployment, that’s where it comes from,” he explained.

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is officially part of the Starke Taskforce for Overdose Prevention. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin says the school board approved a memorandum of understanding with Porter-Starke Services last week, allowing N.J.-S.P. to join the consortium. Zupin says she’ll serve as the school corporation’s representative and bring ideas back to the schools.

The Winamac Park Board continues discussing ways to spruce up the entrance to the fairgrounds in the back of the Town Park. During this month’s meeting, Park Board President Jon Chapman noted that the short wooden posts surrounding the circular landscaped island where the sign is located are rotting. He proposed making that area smaller, but replacing the wooden posts with a concrete curb.

The Pulaski County Clerk’s Office is accepting absentee ballot requests through its Facebook page. Any voter can choose to vote by mail in this year’s primary by filling out a request form and turning it in to county election officials by May 21 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Starke County’s COVID-19 patient continues self-isolating at home, according to Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch. “I’m not getting into as far as who or anything else,” he says. “But as far as any contacts or anything like that, they’ve already been addressed, and they’re also self-isolating at this time.”

Indiana continues to see new COVID-19 cases, as testing increases. State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box says the number of people tested has increased from fewer than 300 a week ago to more than 3,300 on Wednesday, with about 14 percent of those tests coming back positive.
