The Starke County Council is slated to approve budgets when they meet in special session this evening.
The council will adopt the 2018 county budgets and the Starke County Solid Waste 2018 budget.
The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. CT to take action on those budgets in the meeting room in the Starke County Annex Building No. 1 in Knox.
Medaryville’s 2018 budget was formally adopted by the town council Wednesday. It calls for a General Fund of more than $257,000 and a Motor Vehicle Highway Fund of just under $76,000, with a total budget of just over $474,000.
The Town of Winamac has formally adopted its 2018 budget. A budget ordinance was passed by the town council Monday.
Winamac’s 2018 budget will be up for consideration during tonight’s town council meeting. It calls for a General Fund of over $1 million and a Park Fund of over $137,000, with a total budget of just under $1.6 million. One challenge the town has to deal with was an unanticipated drop in county income tax revenues.

The Pulaski County Council officially adopted the county’s 2018 budget and salary matrix Monday. The proposal calls for a one-percent pay raise for most full-time county employees. The hourly pay range for part-time employees will also increase by a couple dollars, according to council members.
The Culver Town Council approved readings on the ordinance adopting the 2018 budget for the Town of Culver.
The total budget listed on Indiana Gateway is $2,230,980. The General Fund is just over $1,840,000 while Motor Vehicle Highway is set at $59,000. The Park and Recreation budget is approximately $229,000.
The Hamlet Town Council is expected to adopt the town’s 2018 budget when it meets tonight. It calls for a total budget of just over $468,000, with a General Fund of more than $321,000 and a Motor Vehicle Highway Fund of just under $60,000.
The West Central School Board members adopted the corporation’s 2018 budget when they met on Thursday.
Superintendent Don Street said the 2018 budget is similar to last year’s numbers. According to Indiana Gateway, the budget is listed at $9,933,348 with $200,000 in the Bus Replacement Plan and $1.1 million in the budget for capital projects.
The Pulaski County Council is expected to adopt the county’s 2018 budget when it meets tonight. This comes after council members made an additional round of cuts to the proposal last week. That included giving county employees a one-percent raise, rather than two-percent, and denying a request from Superior Court to add a second public defender. They also plan to shift $200,000 in 911 dispatchers’ salaries out of the county’s General Fund.
Pulaski County may be looking to state lawmakers to help make up a shortfall in local income tax revenues. The issue was brought to the attention of the county council last month, after Winamac officials noticed a sudden drop in the town’s share of Local Levy Freeze Income Tax funds. Pulaski County communities are now facing big holes in their 2018 budgets.
The Pulaski County Council met in special session Wednesday to cut $338,000 from its 2018 budget proposal. As part of that effort, county employees who were set to get a two-percent raise would now only get a one-percent increase, based on Wednesday’s discussion. That’s expected to save the county about $45,000 in next year’s budget.
The Starke County Council members did hold a public hearing Monday evening to gather public comment on the 2018 budget, but the lack of a quorum has forced a second public hearing.
The council needs to have at least four members present to recognize a quorum. Members Brad Hazelton, Nancy Dembowski and Bryan Cavendar were physically present Monday night for the public hearing. It was thought that if a fourth member could be part of the meeting via teleconference, it could be a legally called meeting. It was found that the meeting cannot be counted as legal so a second public hearing is scheduled.
The Pulaski County Council will put the finishing touches on its 2018 budget tonight. Council members spent a couple of days in August working on the budget with various county department heads. But as of last month’s regular meeting, a few hundred thousand dollars still had to be cut.

Hamlet residents had the chance to weigh in on the town’s 2018 budget Wednesday. No major concerns were raised during the annual budget hearing, according to Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts.
The Oregon-Davis School Board accepted a rather unusual donation Monday.
The Starke County Council Monday night approved a three percent increase for county employees. The council members discussed what sort of impact that will have on the budget and found it would be about a $78,000 increase. They felt that was feasible, but they hope that the state won’t cut too much out of the budget.
The public hearing for the 2018 budget for Starke County will be held on Oct. 2. The budget adoption is scheduled for Oct. 18. Budgets must be approved by Nov. 1.
