A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed in connection with last week’s bus crash that claimed the life of Winamac Middle School student Owen Abbott. According to documents filed in Marshall Circuit Court Tuesday, Abbott’s mother, Britni Fritz, is suing the driver of the truck that allegedly crashed into the bus, along with the truck’s owner.

School Custodian Repairs Winamac Town Park Toilet, Amid Dispute Between School, Park Board

A broken toilet that’s been a point of contention between the Winamac Park Board and the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation has been repaired, thanks to a school custodian. That’s what Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo told the park board last Thursday. “I received a phone call last night, in the evening, from Steve Lawson, who is a maintenance person at the school,” DeLorenzo said. “He, on his own time, went and repaired the toilet in the bathrooms up at the ball diamonds that the school was unwilling to address, and he decided that he would take care of that on his own.”

A “disconnection” between the Park Board and the school corporation was brought to the attention of the Winamac Town Council last week.
Park Board President Courtney Poor came before the council last Monday to discuss a number of matters related to the park. One item he brought up was a perceived lack of labor sharing cooperation from school officials to assist with projects, specifically ones related to the concession stand area and the ball diamonds. Mentoring and retaining young teachers is the goal of a new partnership involving the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation and the Indiana Department of Education. Students and staff at Eastern Pulaski Community Schools have been engaging in discussions about student safety ever since February’s school shooting sparked some concerns within the community.
While school officials are working diligently to address safety, students are also getting involved. For instance, students with the Winamac High School Presidential Council have organized for an assembly to be held today, in memory of students lost in the Parkland, Florida shooting. Nominations Needed for Winamac Distinguished Alumni Class
The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation is accepting nominations for the Winamac Distinguished Alumni Class of 2018.
According to Superintendent Dan Foster, nominations may include graduates from Winamac High School, Pulaski High School or Star City High School, living or deceased, who have led successful lives while substantially contributing to their work, communities, state, or country. The people chosen will be honored in a ceremony in September and will be asked to share their experiences with Winamac High School students.
Eastern Pulaski School Board Appoints Coach Craig Barr to Champ Club Director Position
At the Eastern Pulaski Community School Board meeting Monday night, Craig Barr was officially appointed to the recently established position of Champ Club Director.
The Winamac Champ Club is an organized, formal weightlifting and training program that meets before school, according to Superintendent Dan Foster. The club was formed about a year and a half ago. Initially, the club was limited to female students but was expanded to be a co-ed club.
Foster explained that Barr served as the leader of the club on a volunteer basis up until now but when this year’s Master Contract was negotiated they added on the extracurricular position of Champ Club Director. Continue reading
