A “disconnection” between the Park Board and the school corporation was brought to the attention of the Winamac Town Council last week.
Park Board President Courtney Poor came before the council last Monday to discuss a number of matters related to the park. One item he brought up was a perceived lack of labor sharing cooperation from school officials to assist with projects, specifically ones related to the concession stand area and the ball diamonds. Mentoring and retaining young teachers is the goal of a new partnership involving the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation and the Indiana Department of Education. Eastern Pulaski Superintendent Dan Foster says the DOE is putting together a handbook to help with that effort, and the school corporation has been asked to join in.

The State of Indiana has awarded more than $14 million in this year’s round of Secured School Safety Grants. The program provides a 50-50 match to help schools buy security equipment, hire resource officers, or conduct threat assessments.
Students and staff at Eastern Pulaski Community Schools have been engaging in discussions about student safety ever since February’s school shooting sparked some concerns within the community.
While school officials are working diligently to address safety, students are also getting involved. For instance, students with the Winamac High School Presidential Council have organized for an assembly to be held today, in memory of students lost in the Parkland, Florida shooting. Rachel’s Challenge is coming to Eastern Pulaski Schools Tuesday. The program aims to reduce school bullying and violence, and encourage acts of kindness.
The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation is accepting nominations for the Winamac Distinguished Alumni Class of 2018.
According to Superintendent Dan Foster, nominations may include graduates from Winamac High School, Pulaski High School or Star City High School, living or deceased, who have led successful lives while substantially contributing to their work, communities, state, or country. The people chosen will be honored in a ceremony in September and will be asked to share their experiences with Winamac High School students.
At the Eastern Pulaski Community School Board meeting Monday night, Craig Barr was officially appointed to the recently established position of Champ Club Director.
The Winamac Champ Club is an organized, formal weightlifting and training program that meets before school, according to Superintendent Dan Foster. The club was formed about a year and a half ago. Initially, the club was limited to female students but was expanded to be a co-ed club.
Foster explained that Barr served as the leader of the club on a volunteer basis up until now but when this year’s Master Contract was negotiated they added on the extracurricular position of Champ Club Director. Continue reading
At the Eastern Pulaski School Board meeting Monday evening, board members discussed and considered information pertaining to proposed paving and concrete projects.
Superintendent Dan Foster explained that there are some safety concerns with the current drop-off locations at the schools. Foster said, “The afternoon pick-up procedures aren’t too bad but the morning drop-off procedures, we’ve really struggled with coming up with a good way to do that with the layout of our campus. Some local school corporations saw their letter grades improve slightly, while others remained flat. On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education finalized the A-to-F grades for each of the state’s school corporations for the 2016-2017 school year.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board scholarship fund got a little bit bigger Monday night after the board approved a donation from Gibraltar Design.
Superintendent Dan Foster explained that in the past, Gibraltar had thanked the school corporation for their business by hosting a dinner or another social function of some kind. However, this year, rather than trying to coordinate with varying schedules the company decided to show their appreciation by sending a $250 donation.
Superintendent Foster said the money will go toward the annual school board scholarship which would bring it up to approximately $10,000.
The Eastern Pulaski Community School Board will hold a public hearing over the school corporation’s 2018 budget, capital projects plan and bus replacement plan when they meet tonight.
The budget estimate submitted to Gateway Indiana states that the corporation’s general fund is estimated at a little over $9 million, while the rainy day fund has exactly $1 million. The capital projects plan has more than $2 million and the bus replacement plan is estimated at $270,000. Continue reading
Three local elementary schools saw their letter grades decline in the latest round of School Accountability Grades. Oregon-Davis, Eastern Pulaski, and West Central elementary schools all got a C for the 2016-2017 school year, down from a B the year before. Culver Community Middle/High School also went from a B to a C.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board did not make a decision last night on the proposed $14 million building renovation project slated to start in 2015. Superintendent Dan Foster says they do not want to hurry a project of this magnitude. He adds they want to make sure they get exactly what they want in the end. The work will be funded through a tax increase.
At the board meeting Monday evening the Eastern Pulaski Community School board received a donation from the North Central Quail Forever Chapter that completed the funding needed to begin the archery program at the schools. Superintendent Dan Foster is excited to see how the program progresses.
