The Knox City Street Department is ready for winter. Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works members last week that the city has plenty of salt to start of the winter season due to last year’s mild winter.
Knox Street Department to Extend Leaf Pickup Two Weeks
The Knox City Street Department will be extending leaf pickup next week.
Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works on Wednesday that leaves have fallen but they’re waiting for residents to have the time to rake them and place them along the front of properties along the street.
Knox Street Department Ready for Next Winter Storm
The salt shed is full, and the Knox City Street Department is ready for the next snow event.
Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Public Works members on Wednesday that they had used 80 percent of their contract for salt. Since January, 32 inches of movable snow has been recorded by the street superintendent. He said the department should be good for the rest of the season, and all equipment has been maintained and updated.
Knox Street Department Ready for Winter Weather
Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Knox Board of Public Works members that the last leaf pickup was conducted last week and overall the season went really well.
Borg said his staff is ready to tackle winter. He has obtained a different sand to mix with the salt in order for it to distribute onto the road with greater ease. Borg said the sand has some fine stone in it so it can flow better and he’s purchased it from Area Excavating at a less expensive price and half of the cost of transportation to haul it to the city than the previous vendor and location. He indicated that there is a stockpile of the sand ready for when the snow hits.
Road Salt Prices are Saltier this Year
Knox Street Department Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Public Works members recently that the price of road salt went up about 50 percent this year.
Borg said the city gets 150 ton of salt and it will cost the city $73.32 a ton in an annual agreement with the state co-op. Last year, the price of road salt was $48.84 and the cost was $7,300. This year the city will be paying $11,000.
Knox Water Department to Flush Hydrants This Week
The Knox City Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants this week beginning today through Friday.
According to Water Superintendent Todd Gardner, there are three benefits to flushing fire hydrants. The action exercises the hydrants to keep them in good functioning order and to ensure fittings are working properly. Iron and other deposits are flushed out of lines that may build up over time and stagnant water is removing from areas that may not have a high volume of use.

Knox Street Dept. Plans to Patch Problematic Potholes
With all the freezing and thawing that’s been going on, the prominence of potholes throughout the area is on the rise. Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told WKVI that the weather has been surprisingly gentle to the roads – that is, until these last few days. A few potholes have popped up in the area, and Borg said his crew is hoping to get those filled up soon.
IDEM Grants City of Knox Permission To Burn Storm Brush
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has granted permission to the city of Knox to burn the brush that has accumulated from the storms that ravaged the city on July 24.
The Knox City Street Department has already prepared an area for a burn and will notify the fire department when that activity will proceed. This is not for individual residents to burn, but the city of Knox as a government entity.
Mosquito Fogging to Begin in Knox
The Knox City Street Department will be out with the mosquito fogger soon. Mayor Rick Chambers said yesterday that the City is waiting for the best time to fog. They can not fog when it’s windy.
Fogging is mostly done at dusk, when the mosquitoes are out looking for food.
