Continue readingA graduating senior student from Knox Community High School has been chosen as the 2019 Starke County Community Foundation Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Madeline Krueger will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana college or university of her choice. She’ll also get a $900 yearly stipend to cover the costs of required books and equipment.
According to a press release from the Starke County Community Foundation, Madeline plans to study Civil Engineering at Purdue University West Lafayette. Continue reading
Giving Tuesday brought in more than $90,000 to many funds within the Starke County Community Foundation. The total amount included a promise from Lilly Endowment, Inc. to match all gifts to community funds $2.00 for every $1.00 donated.
The Ken Craig Community Garden had a very successful summer of supplying fresh food to community members and various local organizations. Representatives report that they’ll be able to support even more growth in the future thanks to a grant provided by the Starke County Community Foundation.
Ever since funds from the Foundation were received back in October, garden volunteers have been racing against the cold weather to get a greenhouse put in place. The Starke County Commissioners held a public hearing Monday night on a Broadband Readiness Planning Grant.
Those planning to donate to one of the Starke County Community Foundation’s community funds have the chance to make their money go even further. The Lilly Endowment has announced a “2-for-1 dollar matching opportunity” for gifts to community funds, according to a Community Foundation press release. On top of that, the Starke County Community Foundation will match community fund donations dollar-for-dollar during its annual open house on Giving Tuesday, November 27.
The Starke County Community Foundation has announced the winner of its 2018 James R. Hardesty Leadership in Philanthropy Award. Barbara McLaughlin was presented with the award during last week’s Community Impact Reception.
The National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) recognizes November as a time to raise awareness of scholarship opportunities for current and future college students, as there are a lot of students who are looking for the best refinance student loans and they need financial assistance. That is why November is recognized as National Scholarship Month.
According to information provided on Scholarships.com, National Scholarship Month used to be acknowledged in May until 2008. However, since many scholarship providers begin posting new scholarship information and competitions for the next academic year around November, it was moved. Continue reading
Donations for school safety training and an elementary school field trip were formally accepted by the Knox School Board last week. The school corporation received $834 from the Starke County Community Foundation’s Go for School Safety Fund. That helped with the cost of last month’s active shooter tabletop exercise for Starke County school officials and first responders. The school board also accepted a donation from the Bennett family, to help pay for the third grade field trip to Fair Oaks Farms.
Starke County officials hope that recent upgrades to the County Forest will help attract new visitors. County Park Board members and Community Foundation representatives joined Forester Bruce Wakeland, Commissioner Kathy Norem, and several others Wednesday afternoon, to cut the ribbon on the forest’s upgraded access road.
Knox High School’s Graphic Arts Department is getting a major equipment upgrade, thanks to a recent donation. Compliance Signs gave the school two Roland wide body printers, valued at $12,500 each. On top of that, CutCardStock of Valparaiso has donated $450 worth of paper. The donations were officially accepted by the school board last week.
The Stellar Executive Team of Starke County has been assembled.

The Starke County Commissioners passed along their support of having a celebration event for the newly finished upgrades at the Starke County Forest.
A recent impact grant awarded by the Starke County Community Foundation is helping local emergency personnel save lives.
Starke County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) used the $14,350 they received from the SCCF to purchase a LUCAS CPR Device, and paid for one year of maintenance for the medical apparatus. The technology performs non-stop CPR, freeing the EMS responder to treat and transport the patient to the emergency room. Continue reading
Bicyclists and pedestrians utilizing the trails in North Judson now have some signage to guide them.
Back in May, Prairie Trails Club Representatives Steve and Kathy Lucas came before Town Council members, requesting permission to place signs around town that would help guide people using the trails. The members unanimously approved the request.
As a reminder, The Erie Trail in North Judson runs a little more than 9 miles and is a part of two major trails that stretch across the whole country. Continue reading
