Those planning to donate to one of the Starke County Community Foundation’s community funds have the chance to make their money go even further. The Lilly Endowment has announced a “2-for-1 dollar matching opportunity” for gifts to community funds, according to a Community Foundation press release. On top of that, the Starke County Community Foundation will match community fund donations dollar-for-dollar during its annual open house on Giving Tuesday, November 27.

The National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) recognizes November as a time to raise awareness of scholarship opportunities for current and future college students, as there are a lot of students who are looking for the best refinance student loans and they need financial assistance. That is why November is recognized as National Scholarship Month.
According to information provided on Scholarships.com, National Scholarship Month used to be acknowledged in May until 2008. Donations Highlighted at Knox School Board Meeting
Donations for school safety training and an elementary school field trip were formally accepted by the Knox School Board last week. The school corporation received $834 from the Starke County Community Foundation’s Go for School Safety Fund. That helped with the cost of last month’s active shooter tabletop exercise for Starke County school officials and first responders. The school board also accepted a donation from the Bennett family, to help pay for the third grade field trip to Fair Oaks Farms.
Officials Cut Ribbon on Starke County Forest Upgrades
Starke County officials hope that recent upgrades to the County Forest will help attract new visitors. County Park Board members and Community Foundation representatives joined Forester Bruce Wakeland, Commissioner Kathy Norem, and several others Wednesday afternoon, to cut the ribbon on the forest’s upgraded access road.
$25,000 Worth of Equipment Donated to Knox High School Graphic Arts Department
Knox High School’s Graphic Arts Department is getting a major equipment upgrade, thanks to a recent donation. Compliance Signs gave the school two Roland wide body printers, valued at $12,500 each. On top of that, CutCardStock of Valparaiso has donated $450 worth of paper. The donations were officially accepted by the school board last week.

Starke County Community Foundation Impact Grant Utilized to Help Save Lives
A recent impact grant awarded by the Starke County Community Foundation is helping local emergency personnel save lives.
Starke County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) used the $14,350 they received from the SCCF to purchase a LUCAS CPR Device, and paid for one year of maintenance for the medical apparatus. The technology performs non-stop CPR, freeing the EMS responder to treat and transport the patient to the emergency room. Continue reading
Signage Installed Around North Judson to Help Guide Trail Travelers
Bicyclists and pedestrians utilizing the trails in North Judson now have some signage to guide them.
Back in May, Prairie Trails Club Representatives Steve and Kathy Lucas came before Town Council members, requesting permission to place signs around town that would help guide people using the trails. The members unanimously approved the request.
As a reminder, The Erie Trail in North Judson runs a little more than 9 miles and is a part of two major trails that stretch across the whole country. Continue reading

2019 Starke County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Applications Now Available
Senior students who may be stressing out about how to pay for college will be happy to learn that applications are now available for the Starke County Community Foundation’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.
Community Foundation officials say that in order to be eligible for this 4-year full-tuition scholarship, applicants have to currently reside in Starke County. They also need to be a high school senior on track to graduate with a diploma from an accredited Indiana high school by the end of June 2019. Continue reading
Bass Lake Beach Patio Repairs Underway, Following Installation of Glacial Stone
Upgrades at the Bass Lake Beach continue to move ahead. During Tuesday’s Starke County Park Board meeting, it was reported that the glacial stone has been installed, with some help from the Starke County Highway Department. The goal is to protect the facility from incoming waves and prevent future erosion.

Knox School Board Accepts Funds from Starke County Community Foundation
The Knox School Board last week accepted nearly $3,700 in funding from the Starke County Community Foundation. Just under $3,500 of that was a regular payout from the Knox Community School Corporation Student Scholarship/Presentation Fund, according to Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart. “That’s the interest that we earn off of that, and we use that, then, for presentations,” he said. “So I was not aware that that fund existed.”

Materials From Old North Judson Fire House Used for Memorial Wall, Fire Chief Shares Grant Success
The North Judson Fire Department plans to commemorate their old firehouse with a monument in front of the new building. At Monday night’s North Judson Town Council meeting, Fire Chief Joe Leszek explained that some material from the old firehouse was retrieved during the demolition process.
Leszek told members, “When the old firehouse was torn down, some of our members went over there and we salvaged some of the limestone and it was always our plan to build a small little memorial wall.” Continue reading
Knox Kindergarten Countdown Program Gets $15,000 Grant from Hardesty Fund
Knox Elementary School will once again be able to offer two Kindergarten Countdown camps, thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Hardesty Memorial Endowment Fund. That will allow the program to serve 40 incoming kindergartners, according to Director of Curriculum and Instruction Peggy Shidaker.
North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Highlights Summer School Opportunities
North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Annette Zupin outlined some summer school opportunities when school board members met Tuesday night.
One thing she highlighted was NJSP’s Countdown to Kindergarten which is an opportunity for incoming kindergarten students to familiarize themselves with the school experience. Dr. Zupin said it will be held for two weeks with students coming in for four days each week. That will run from July 16th through 19th and July 23rd through the 26th.
Additionally, Zupin mentioned that the Starke County Community Foundation provided a $7,000 donation to help fund the Kindergarten Countdown program, as they’ve done for the past few years. Continue reading
