West Central, Eastern Pulaski Schools Discuss Enrollment

Although the Average Daily Membership, or ADM count, isn’t officially taken until Friday, West Central School Superintendent Charles Mellon discussed the preliminary enrollment for this year with the board last week.

“We like to keep track of that because the number of students equals the amount of money we receive from the state,” said Mellon. “As far as the number of students we have currently, it’s identical to last year. Some of these people are migrant students that will not be with us all year and they may not be with us on Sept. 14, but they are in the count at the current time.”

Eastern Pulaski School Corporation Acquires Bus Garage Property

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation is now the owner of the abandoned state highway property that the corporation has been leasing from the Indiana Department of Transportation as a bus garage.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman made the announcement at the recent school board meeting.

“I’ve gone back to 1984 and found correspondence with INDOT stating that we could secure that property,” explained Dr. Klitzman.

Eastern Pulaski Schools Receive Donations For Supplies, Upgrade

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation recently received two donations. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman said the North-Central Co-op donated $840 to the elementary school, specifically for classroom supplies for the teachers.

“They just decided it was a project they wanted to do,” explained Klitzman. “Mrs. Collins [Principal of the Elementary School] did go down to their facility to accept the donation and asked them if they had children in our school corporation and no one did. They just wanted to do it to help us.”

Eastern Pulaski School Corporation Plans Summer Maintenance Projects

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation’s maintenance staff is working hard on quite a few projects this summer, and Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman explained that the majority of these changes include digital upgrades.

“We’re continuing our project at the middle school and high school of changing the HVAC controls from pneumatic to digital,” explained Klitzman. “We are in the process of hanging all of the projectors in every classroom at the elementary level. They will be able to hook them up to their computers and basically bring the world into their classroom via the internet and help with student learning in that case.”

The regular deep-cleaning is also underway to get the classrooms and all of the school facilities ready for the start of another school year in August.

Eastern Pulaski Schools Take A Different Approach To Technology

While schools throughout the state swiftly move forward with providing students with more and more technology, Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman says the school board has decided to take technology there at a more manageable pace.

“There’s been many schools that have decided they’re going to give every student a computer, a hand-held device – it’s called the one-on-one approach, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We found at Eastern Pulaski, our approach would be moving forward a little bit slower. We’re going to put hand-held devices, iPads, in the hands of students in certain subjects and then keep expanding and growing from that,” stated Klitzman.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Approves New Middle School Principal

Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Kltizman announced that the school board members have approved the employment of a new middle school principal.

“We hired Mr. Ryan Dickenson as the middle school principal,” announced Klitzman. “Mr. Dickenson has 13 years of teaching experience, all at the middle school level, at a couple of school corporations. For the past four years, he has been the assistant principal/athletic director at Bremen schools. He is credited by administrators at Bremen of being key in the turnaround Bremen has experienced academically. He’s got a great faculty to work with and a great staff. We look forward to Mr. Dickenson’s start in the fall.”

Graduation Services To Take Place Tomorrow Afternoon For Local Schools

Graduation services were held last night for Eastern Pulaski Seniors and another graduation service is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. West Central School Superintendent Charles Mellon reports the details of graduation services for seniors.

“That’ll be on Sunday, May 27,” said Mellon. “Baccalaureate is at 2 p.m. ET with Commencement to follow.”

Knox Community High School Commencement is Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Weinberg Gymnasium, and graduation at North Judson-San Pierre High School is slated for Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Memorandum Of Understanding Approved By Eastern Pulaski School Board

The Eastern Pulaski School Board members approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Eastern Pulaski Teacher’s Association during their meeting Monday night. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman says the agreement would affect new employees coming to the corporation.

“We would not pay more than five years at the Master’s level,” explained Klitzman. “As I told the Board, this would have an impact and give people a choice. I think it would greatly expand our pool of candidates because teachers know full well that once they reach a certain portion on a salary schedule, it’s going to be harder for them to change jobs just because of that price tag. If the teacher has a job someplace else, and this would be my assumption, and they say, ‘You know what? I’d rather be at Eastern Pulaski Schools because it’s closer or because I want a change in assignment and I’m willing to take less money to do that.’ Then, it’s a win-win situation. If they’re not, then they stay in the job they have.”

Walk to School Day this Thursday in Winamac

Winamac students, Safe Routes to School Task Force leaders, Kiwanis Club members and local law enforcement will be participating in “Walk to School Day” in Winamac this Thursday, April 12th.

The walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. ET at the corner of Main and Logan Streets in Winamac and all participants will walk down Main Street to the north side of the County Courthouse, to Monticello Street to Riverside Drive and it will end at the Elementary and Middle Schools. You are also invited to join in the walk.

“Walk to School Day” in the Town of Winamac is scheduled for Thursday, April 12th.

Students will gather at 7:15 a.m. ET at the Downtown Depot on the corner of Main and Logan Streets in Winamac and the walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. ET. The students will walk down Main Street to the north side of the County Courthouse, to Monticello Street to Riverside Drive and it will end at the Elementary and Middle Schools. Safe Routes Task Force leaders, Kiwanis Key Club members and local law enforcement will also participate in the effort. You are also welcome to join in.

Eastern Pulaski Schools to Work on Safe Routes to School

Thanks to the Safe Routes to School Committee at the Eastern Pulaski Schools Corporation, children walking or riding bicycles to school may not be so uncommon in the future. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman explained that the committee is currently working on a planning grant designed to show different routes to the school that can be enhanced and improved on in terms of accessibility and safety. Klitzman says that these improvements could encourage more parents to allow children to walk or ride their bikes to school.

Klitzman says that seven students are picked at random to showcase their reading skills to the board members by reading to them.

Eastern Pulaski Schools, Town of Winamac Constructing a Safe Route to School

The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation and the Town of Winamac are working together to construct a safe route to school. Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman explains where the route would be located.

“It’s the dovetail off the pathway trail that used to be the railroad tracks that they made into very nice bicycle, running and walking path,” said Dr. Klitzman. “What they want to do is take roadways from that pathway that lead to school and do everything they can to make it safe and useable. It’s a wellness thing. That’s so students can walk, or run, or ride their bike safely to school.”

Driver’s Education Class to Cease at Winamac High School

This is the last year that an instructor from Eastern Pulaski Schools will be teaching a Driver’s Education course during the regular school day. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman said this was a planned move on the school board’s part.

“This was decided a couple of years ago to phase it out,” explained Dr. Klitzman. “Driver’s Ed teacher, Mr. Nick Tribby, has already signed up with an outside company and is in fact teaching Driver’s Ed in the evenings and after school. Another one of our teachers, Mr. Casey Hines, has signed up. It will not be through Winamac High School. It will be through this new company that does this, but there will still be those opportunities for the driver’s training program.

Eastern Pulaski School Corporation Administrators Begin Teacher Evaluation Training

The Eastern Pulaski School Board got an update this week on teacher evaluation training from Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman.

“It’s very complex and it’s brand new,” stated Dr. Klitzman. “Before you can evaluate any teachers, you need to go through a series of training. There are four training sessions and we have now gone through two of them. It’s designed to give feedback, very specifically, with data, with evidence, on what a teacher is doing and how they can perhaps do something differently to have a greater impact on student learning, or highlight, celebrate and recognize the good things they are doing. Ultimately, these evaluations are going to be tied to their compensation.”

Culver Community Schools Still Considering Deannexation Petition

An update on the petition requesting deannexation of Tippecanoe Township from the Culver Community School Corporation was requested by Monterey Town Board President Jim Fleury this week. Fleury asked the board when they expected to have a decision regarding the petition, which he says has accumulated over 640 signatures.

Safe Routes to School and Panhandle Pathway Officials Continue with Project in Winamac

Dave Bennett and John Bawcum from the Panhandle Pathway and Safe Routes to School organizations reported to the Winamac Town Board on their current project.

Officials are connecting a section of the Panhandle Pathway with Superior Street to provide Eastern Pulaski School students with a safe route to school. A piece of land was acquired from a resident for the project and an easement for the project was granted. Stone is lining the pathway for now, but it will be paved when spring arrives.
