Efforts to extend the Panhandle Pathway have finally gotten the support of the Pulaski County Commissioners. A motion to that effect was approved during last week’s meeting, on the condition that the plans meet the approval of local landowners. The first phase would extend the Panhandle Pathway north to the Tippecanoe River State Park. It would run alongside U.S. 35 for much of that length.

A special hunt to control Culver’s deer population was suggested by Town Council Member Bill Cleavenger during last week’s meeting. He said he thinks the deer population is getting out of hand. “There’s some movement within the various county areas to consider approaching the DNR for a special hunt,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything, obviously, we can do now, but my suggestion is that we contact the DNR, find out what we might have to do for next year.”

Several local lakes will see improvements, thanks to Lake and River Enhancement grants from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The DNR has awarded nearly $660,000 to help control invasive aquatic plants at 63 Indiana lakes.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is giving Hoosiers a reason to get outdoors this weekend. Today and tomorrow are Free Fishing Days. That means Indiana residents don’t need a fishing license or trout stamp to fish public waters.
DNR Finds No Flood Control Violations Near Starke County Forest
The Starke County Forest appears to have been absolved from blame for flooding concerns in the local area. A letter from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was presented to the Starke County Park Board last week. In it, an engineer in the department’s compliance and enforcement section addressed concerns apparently raised by a neighboring property owner.
LaPorte County Police Investigate Weekend Drowning
Police say a LaPorte County man drowned Saturday afternoon, in a pond in the 7100 block of West Joliet Road. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says Glenn F. Zeman, 61, had been out on the pond in a watercraft. But then family members who’d been there with him said they couldn’t find him. Police say the watercraft Zeman had been riding was then found capsized, and his body was pulled from the water a short time later.
Pool Project Won’t Be Included in Winamac Park Board’s Grant Application This Year
The Winamac Park Board reiterated Thursday that it will not apply for a grant for the town’s swimming pool project this year. The town has put the project on hold, due to concerns that money wouldn’t be available to run the pool if it’s built. The Winamac Pool Committee has proposed a cheaper option, but so far, it hasn’t gotten the official support of the town council.
