The owners of 401 East Lake Street in Knox could have to pay a $2,500 penalty, after city officials say they failed to make necessary repairs for the past year. Director of Building and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost told the board of works last month that he issued an order to repair the home last September, after getting numerous complaints about birds flying in and out through holes in the walls. Specifically, the owners were asked to finish the exterior siding, roof, and roof framing.

Mayor Dennis Estok said the Main Street property owner was previously told to replace glass in the storefront and respond to other violations within the building and it wasn’t done within the timeframe given.
Concerns Surround Unsafe Building in Downtown Knox
The Knox Board of Public Works took action this week to enforce unsafe building violations on a downtown building.
The owner of 1 N. Main Street and 3 N. Main Street was previously told to replace glass from a broken window at the storefront at that location and it is currently boarded shut. Knox Mayor Dennis Estok said that the owner has had plenty of time to make the proper changes. He was given 45 days to make repairs on several violations within the buildings and Estok said nothing has been done with only a handful of days left on the time frame allowed for repairs. Knox Board of Public Works to Meet Today
The Knox Board of Public Works will discuss enforcement actions on three pieces of property when they meet this morning.
Knox Director of Building, Planning and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost revoked a permit at 325 Carlson Drive and the board members will have information pertaining to the issue of the construction of a steel carport on the property this morning. Enforcement action at 1 N. Main Street and 3 N. Main Street will also be reviewed.
Knox Board of Public Works Members Get Updates on Blighted Structures
The Knox Board of Public Works received updates on two blighted structures in the city limits.
Jack Fogarty owns the property at 301 S. Shield St. and has tried to refinance with no success and he explained that his financial situation doesn’t support the updates. He understands that the property needs a new roof, exterior work and interior work. He just asked the board for one thing.
Knox Board of Public Works to Meet Today
The Knox Board of Public Works will meet this morning where the members will receive information on the cleanup or renovation efforts at 301 N. Shield Street and 6 N. Pearl Street.
The board heard from Lucia Valladares during their last meeting in August where she discussed the progress on renovation efforts on the home at 6 N. Pearl Street. She said she would be hiring a business to help with the demolition portion of the proposed project. She plans on focusing on the exterior part of the building this year. Her plan is to demolish two side additions and the back porch, reinforce the foundation, put up siding, replace the roof and construct a new addition. She anticipates the exterior work to be complete by winter.
Knox Board of Works Receives Update on Unsafe House
The Knox Board of Public Works and Safety heard from homeowner Lucia Valladares on the progress on renovation efforts on the home at 6 N. Pearl Street.
Valladares said she was involved in a motor vehicle accident and hasn’t been able to get any work done on the property. She plans to focus on the exterior part of the building yet this year. Her plan is to demolish two side additions and the back porch, reinforce the foundation, start up siding installation, replace the roof, and construct a new addition.
Demolition Planned for 202 North Pearl Street, As Part of Knox Blight Elimination Effort

Knox Board of Public Works Receives Update on Property
The members of the Knox Board of Public Works received an update on the rehabilitation of the property at 6 N. Pearl Street.
Knox Director of Building, Planning and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost said the owner, Lucia Valladares, was in a car accident and has not been able to complete any work. Pfost reported that she is looking for a vehicle capable of towing a trailer in order to aid her work on the dilapidated structure.
Renovation plans were previously approved by the board. Pfost said an engineer’s report on the foundation found that only a few repairs need to be made in order to move forward with work. Continue reading
