Flooding concerns have led to the cancellation of tomorrow’s Winamac Town Park cleanup day. Park Board President Chris Schramm made the announcement during Thursday’s board meeting.

Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo brought the issue to the park board Thursday.
He estimated that 90 to 95 trees have been lost to the emerald ash borer, although there are some that remain. He asked the park board about working with the Tree Committee to gradually plant a variety of new trees over the next few years.

The Winamac Park Board may soon have a firmer cost estimate for a proposed lighting feature for the Town Park’s Swinging Bridge. “Apparently, someone was up with Mr. [Greg] Henry, came up and saw him and have made another appointment. But they did some measurements on the bridge, as far as the lighting,” Park Board President Courtney Poor told the rest of the board last week. “And so he hopes to have some of that information, hopefully, maybe for the January meeting, as far as just estimates from that company. I had requested they have it by the 15th of January, I think.”

Winamac’s new drinking fountains have been installed. Now, the park board plans to recognize one of the donors. Two decorative drinking fountains were placed in the Town Park: an ADA-compliant fountain along the trail near the basketball courts and one to replace the fountain between the swinging bridge and the restrooms. The park board shared the cost of a third drinking fountain for Rinehart Park with the town’s Lion’s Club.
Efforts to upgrade Winamac’s tennis and pickleball facility have come to a standstill. Back in July, the town’s park board approved a $7,000 quote from Leslie Coatings to resurface the Town Park’s tennis court, but stripe it for both tennis and two side-by-side pickleball courts.
The Winamac Park Board is looking to remove some more trees by the end of the year. During last week’s meeting, board member Jon Chapman noted that there’s still money available in this year’s tree removal budget, and he felt the park board should make the most of it. “I think it’s really important that we get someone that’s going to be there and get the work done before December 31,” he said, “not just who somebody on the town board says, ‘Use them,’ because I want it done before the end of the year, so we don’t lose the money.”
Another busy festival season is in the books for the Winamac Town Park. Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo reviewed this summer’s Pulaski County 4-H Fair and Northern Indiana Power from the Past show, during last week’s park board meeting.
The Winamac Park Board is looking to clarify who’s responsible for what, when it comes to the maintenance of the Town Park. Board member Jon Chapman raised the issue during Thursday’s meeting, noting that there are a lot of moving parts, when it comes to running the park, “Some of which are handled by Power from the Past, some of which are handled by [Park Manager] Dave [DeLorenzo], some of which are handled by Dave with help from the town, some of which are handled by other parties. Dave asked from the time we became a board for kind of a list of what the priority things are, and we really haven’t ever done that,” Chapman said.

The number of drinking fountains being donated to the Winamac Park Board is now up to three. Last month, the park board agreed to accept the donation of a decorative drinking fountain from a local resident. It will replace one that currently stands between the swinging bridge and the restrooms in the Town Park.
The Winamac Park Board has come up with a solution that will let the town expand its pickleball facilities while keeping its tennis court. During last week’s meeting, board member Jon Chapman suggested resurfacing the remaining tennis court, but re-striping it for both sports. That way, when the court isn’t being used for tennis, it could be converted into two side-by-side pickleball courts by adding temporary nets.
Winamac may be getting a new adult softball league, but the idea has led to larger questions about insurance requirements. Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo told the park board last week that he’s heard from someone who’s interested in using the large softball diamond for an over-18, coed league. DeLorenzo was told that almost 60 people have expressed interest.
The Winamac Park Board wants to do some more research on possible upgrades to the “swinging bridge,” before looking for volunteers to help with the effort. The Town Park’s Memorial Bridge will be 100 years old in 2023. To celebrate the upcoming centennial, residents have proposed adding some sort of decorative lighting feature, as well as painting the bridge.
A heavily-used drinking fountain in the Winamac Town Park will be getting an upgrade, thanks to a memorial contribution from a local resident. Park board member Jon Chapman brought the proposal to the rest of the board members last week. “I’ve been contacted by a citizen who would like to donate a fountain like the fountain that’s found between the swinging bridge and the restrooms — it’s a stone exterior fountain — as a memorial to her son and husband,” Chapman explained.
The Winamac Park Board still isn’t ready to install new pickleball courts in the Town Park, but a decision about whether the project should move ahead will come next month. The park board has discussed converting the remaining tennis court into two additional pickleball courts, to handle growing demand. Meanwhile, a new tennis court could be built east of the current one, but such a project could come at a significant cost.
The resurgence of Winamac’s Little League program, along with the success of Winamac High School’s softball team, have led to scheduling headaches at the Town Park. Waylon Burke with the Pulaski County Little League told the Winamac Park Board Monday the league has grown a lot over the past three years, with participation reaching levels not seen since 25 years ago.
The Winamac Park Board is once again looking at safety upgrades for the west entrance to the Town Park. During a special meeting Monday, resident Brian Ledley told board members it’s difficult to see oncoming traffic while walking west on Main Street. He pointed out that while the street has a sidewalk, it contains steps. That makes it unsuitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
