A LaPorte County man wanted on suspicion of dealing in a controlled substance was taken into custody Sunday, but not before police say he tried to get away on a motorcycle and then checked into a Michigan City motel. LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies say they went to a home in the 3700 block of East County Road 100 South at about 6:15 p.m. to try to locate Tyler T. Lukac, 26.

Several sick inmates at the LaPorte County Jail have tested negative for COVID-19. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says 19 inmates and three contract employees were tested Monday, after several inmates were showing potential symptoms of the coronavirus and more had been exposed.

A man has been charged with multiple counts of child molesting, following an investigation in LaPorte County. Sheriff’s deputies say they were called to a home in rural Noble Township on February 7, regarding an unwanted guest. When the deputy got there, he was told that a sex offense had just occurred. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division began assisting.

A semi driver faces multiple citations, after police say he crashed into irrigation equipment that was being moved on State Road 2 Tuesday afternoon. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies say they had blocked traffic in both directions on State Road 2 at County Road 600 East, when an eastbound semi drove around the stopped traffic and into a turn lane, narrowly missing a marked police vehicle.

The death of a man found in a LaPorte County pond Friday morning is now being treated as a homicide. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says the man, whose body was found in water south of Fish Lake, has been identified as Joseph D. Clopton, 47, of Chicago. Police say Clopton had been reported missing on December 19.

A Florida man was taken to jail, after allegedly leading LaPorte County Police on a pursuit Saturday morning. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says that around 8:00 a.m., a vehicle that had been reported stolen pulled into a gas station on U.S. 12 near the Michigan state line, where a sheriff’s deputy happened to be parked.
